Default Tax deduction for Hotel Expenses

Hello All

Does any here know whether or not Hotels purchased by a commuting pilot are tax deductible as a business expense????

It's in IRS publication 463 but the short answer is no, your tax home is your base and so expenses there are not deductible.

Pretty much anything you spend as a result of not living in domicile is not deductible as a business expense.

My tax preparer said no to hotels/crash pads for commuting.

Tho, as a new-hire, I was able to take a deduction for the hotel expense during training along with uniforms, headset, and other non reimbursed job expenses. My airline doesn't provide per-diem during training so my accountant was able to deduct gov't rate for the time I was in training as well.

Agree with the above. If you are asked/forced to overnight anywhere other than your base without lodging/per diem provided, that would be an eligible business expense.
