How'd you do it?

By the time you get out of training/IOE you are looking at 9-10 months of 20 something dollars an hour. I cancelled cable/internet, packed my own food for the whole 4 day trip, etc. Living in base helps a lot and obviously if your wife/girlfriend works that helps as well. But having some savings and living within your means is probably the only way to get through it without accruing some additional debt. That being said once you get past first year pay it really is not that bad, especially if you have a line and are able to pick up additional flying over guarantee.

I'm currently unemployed and I'm juggling with this notion. As said earlier, living within you means and being able to decide what is necessary to live and want you want are drastically different. If you only buy what you need, you'd be shocked at how little money you spend. Going to the movies, going out to eat, cable TV, expensive car payments, and DEBT all add up pretty fast. Even cutting just one of those can save you a lot per month.

All the bells and whistles on your cell phone package adds up pretty quick too. If you can picky back on someone else's plan (as an additional line) and pay them the difference for the extra line you might save some cash. I know a pilot that does that and he gets the same service he had before, but pays about $75 less a month.
