All we need to do is print some more money and all will be well, no need to worry, our leaders will take care of everything. Perhaps we should turn in our guns so they can melt them down to make coins?

I don't disagree. But it's interesting that you would put a smiley face to it. Do you normally relish in dispensing bad news, or just in this case?

Perhaps it is sarcasm... if we don't hit rock bottom, we can't get back up....

You can laugh or cry at the folly of man, I find it better to laugh-it is just a joke on us and some of us need to relax just a bit.

It is not the end of the world, just the end of the world for some.

Crisis is the only driver, and the only thing that really gets things done.

It may take years yet, but the course was set a long time ago and cannot be altered.

Do you view the folly of man as a cycle or more linear ?

It goes in cycles, some times are periods of great advance and some times are periods of great decline. Enjoy the ride, because you can't control it.

Read everything you can and study history. It is a grand experiment and we have made much progress, but we have also had many failures. Ideas are the basis of progress, good ones propel us forward and bad ones create disasters. Sometimes we have to try bad ideas over and over before we understand why they are bad. This can consume many lifetimes.

I recommend reading Ayn Rand and George Orwell as a start. I know Rand gets a lot of vehement criticism but that should tell you something. Even if you don't take the time to read all of her books, as they are quite long, at least familiarize yourself with her ideas.

I was having a conversation over dinner a few weeks ago with an intelligent women in her late 30's. She went to Wesleyan which is a highly regarded university. As our conversation progressed, I realized that she did understand the references that I was making. I queried her about Rand and Orwell only to discover that she has not read a single word of either author. I was truly shocked. No 1984 or Animal Farm! My god!

How do you graduate from AP high school and a top university without having read Orwell?
