Yep, the gas stations right near MCO are the worst I've ever seen in 10 years of flying around the USA. It is obvious price gouging, but if you drive just 1/4 mile further down that road, there is another gas station on the same side of the road with normal prices.

Last time I rented was Dec. of 2009 in PHL. I was checking a car out, as a fellow ahead of me was checking in/ returning a vehicle. Gas at the rental (Avis) was $7.65 a gallon from Avis. I do understand that it's always higher at the rental agency, but that is a bit too much for convenience sake. Gouging, to be sure.

Okay, this brings back some memories (oh, crap - he's on his nostalgia bent again). Keep in mind these numbers are approximate, and from 2003, so they don't sound so shocking now - but rest assured they were then!
Back in the summer of 2003 I was in 757 upgrade in Phoenix. I decided to rent a car one weekend to go see some sights, take some photos, etc. Lo and behold, about that time there is a rupture of the (as in one and only) pipeline that feeds Phoenix - virtually overnight prices skyrocket and there are lines around the block for gasoline. (Google it if you're so inclined - July 2003).
The day comes to return the rental car - I'm presented with two options:
Wait in line for two or more hours to pay nearly four dollars a gallon for gas to top off the rental.
Or:
Pay the rental agencies (previously obscene) fee of $2.75 a gallon for not filling it up.
Hmmmm, let me see. Yep, paid the $2.75 a gallon with a smile on my face knowing that for ONCE I'd gotten the better of the car rental company!
These little victories only come along on rare occasions...
