Try stopping at your local ATM before leaving on a trip? Problem solved.

Go to anyplace that you can use your debit card (Target, Kroger, Wal-Mart, Mejeir...etc) and buy candy bar then get some money cashback from your checking account...no Fee's.

I rarely have more than 40 bucks cash on me for my trip. I actually am on a two day trip and started it with 2 dollars...to tip the van driver with.

I went with Bank of America for this reason. They have ATMs in just about every airport. Also like their little "Keep the change" program. Makes it easier than having a pocketfull of change for an entire trip.

Credit unions are good because they don't charge fees at other locations. Many hub airports have ATMs/branches for airline employee credit unions but this won't help much on that Knoxville overnight.

I really don't like Bank of America because their fees are crazy and they're really strict about it too (other banks have been more flexible with fees in my experience) but I keep my accounts with them simply because they're everywhere, I never have to look far for a BoA ATM anywhere in the country.

What sort of fees are you paying for BoA? I have had a checking and savings account with them for several years and even while keeping a very minimal balance in the accounts have never paid any fees.

Charles Schwab has a checking account that earns 3.21% interest and they refund all ATM charges.

My checking account is free as long as I maintain the minimum balance or have one direct deposit monthly (paycheck takes care of that). The savings account is free with one transfer of $25 per month from the checking account.

That savings account is a rainy day/overdraft protection account. I have one with a local credit union for actual savings that currently has a 4% rate.

If you are military:

GET AN ACCOUNT WITH USAA!!!

They have the best customer service and just so i don't stray from the subject, they will reimburse up to $15 worth of atm fees every month that you paid.
