Thanks. I know it's not going to be the same dollar for dollar, but that at least gives me an idea. And yeah $758 a month can add up quickly. Don't even need to get a degree out of it...just stay enrolled and active!

There's a helo guy at my regional who lives in PHX, commutes to SFO one day a week to attend a 3 hour yoga class his GI bill is paying for. He gets San Fran BAH which is something like $3.5-$4k a month. Used only a few months of his GI bill while active duty to get all his FW ratings and time.

Also, no need to spend any resources, money or GI Bill, getting your ATP or type. The regionals will provide that free of charge. My ATP/type ride at my regional was probably the easiest checkride I ever took.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to look into it more when I get closer and/or know where I will be living.

Ive accepted the fact that I will likely end up at a regional for a bit. However I already have my ATP Written done and want my pre-separation majors app submissions to at least have a shot. I also plan on trying to attend a conference or two during my last year on AD for the same reason.

I'd seriously love to know how ur friend is getting "full time" out of one class a week. How can he be sure that he can even attend that 1 day each week?

Spouses get the same BAH as the service member would get, provided you are not on active duty. Live in a high cost area and make over $30K/year tax free.

Awesome, thanks. Our lifestyle is definitely going to be affected early on by getting out..just trying use whatever tools I have to keep it from being too drastic of a change. It'll all be worth it though. Her working part time plus school part time (apparently half time re: credits gets you full BAH) might be the best combo for the budget. Thanks again all

The two classes are self paced with assignments due at the end of each week. You would have time to do them at a regional while on an overnight or on reserve. I think the rough number I get is $758 or so per month tax free for BAH and another $1000 per year paid out quarterly tax free for books and supplies. The BAH is based on geography of the campus I believe but don't quote me on that. There are ways around it where if you attend a single class on a campus and then some online you can be considered a resident student and get the full BAH. It wasn't worth it for me to drive into a school at any set time.
I'm completely not up to date on the GI Bill, but does it actually pay the full cost of those online classes? I'm always for furthering my education and getting a little extra tax free income.....

Oh and is that BAH affected if you're currently in the reserves doing some drill during the month?

AFSOCFlyer,
My info is non-current, as I'm eight years retired from AFRes, but any chance you could Palace Chase into ANG or AFRes? Retraining into a new airframe (did someone say multi-heavy...?) would provide 6-12 months AD for Progression tour. After that, plenty of flying as an available pilot waiting for a bite from the companies all your new squadron mates are employed by.
Just might help you avoid the regionals' pay scales and lifestyle, if you're lucky!

Good luck, and thank you for your service.

Danno,

First off I love the 'reason for edit.' But I hear you 100%. Unfortunately successful PC out of AFSOC is next to impossible. I have a friend that got out of 2yr8mo but it was a perfect storm of opportunity (can't disregard his legwork either).

I have about 2.5yr left on my commitment. I am expecting PCS orders for this winter (adds 3-4 months commitment) which I would accept for a few reasons even though it seems backwards since I want to get out. In short, I'm essentially burned out after ~10 deployments in the last 6yrs..and the PCS should be to a schoolhouse unit with plenty of homestation only instructional flying. And once my commitment is up I'd bounce.

However if the timeline gets pushed back at all (too much addtl commitment) or if they try to send me to another ops sq (same airframe), I'll drop paperwork and try to PC until I annoy them into approving it. Again, PC is very hard to pull off in AFSOC but I'd be happy if it saves me even 6 months. We are short on ACs/IPs now so I'm starting to think that the PCS orders will get pushed back to next spring/summer

Whether out via PC or PFront, plan would be as you mentioned. If I'm very lucky I'll already have a call, otherwise 4 months retraining, 2 months or so of seasoning...and if still no call, consider the regionals to get Part 121 and seriously rack up the hours to try and motivate them to call me!

I just don't want to miss the big hiring window. My commitment already pushes me back to Fall '18(winter 18/19 with PCS). Then add retraining, potential regional time if still no word, etc.

Now I just need to find a guard/reserve unit would like to avoid a commute for drill. commute for the airlines wouldn't be bad

If you have any tips please feel free to share or PM me. Thanks!
