What’s the no-kidding first yr take home pay?
#11
I am in my 11th month at DAL. Retired AF Maj at 20 years. Take-home pay is about $3,100 per month on average (about the same as retirement pay in my case). With new-hire pay and retirement added together, it was about a $40K pay cut (gross).
As others have said, get prepared early. We had cars, credit cards, etc all paid off, and my wife went to work about a year and a half prior to retirement. I have seen very little chane of lifestyle, even with commuting costs.
Good luck.

Supply, demand, sham bankruptcies, and unfortunately a pilot culture that accepts this pay scale mentality. There's way too many young pilots willing to work for peanuts, and there's way too many old pilots who have already been furloughed, been merged, been through 9/11 and now are absolutely unwilling to give up pay on the upper end of the scale. In addition to traditional "management versus labor" problems, we also have some tension between old and young.

It is a whole lot easier to take if you also have a military retirement to supplement your income. I hope that option will remain for my brethren still toiling on AD ...

Keep in mind, you are also on "probation" for your first year at an airline. The low first year pay is part of the "paying your dues" culture.
