Default Military suicides top combat deaths

More military members died in suicides last year than have died in combat:

I want to share the web version of an article from The Daily, the tablet-based original news publication. - WWW.THEDAILY.COM

This is a sad state of affairs.

Wow. We've all heard about this problem, but I had no idea it was that bad.

I was in a recent briefing with Army and Air Guard folks.
When asked who knew a victim of suicide, very close to half raised their hands.
Sad.

I'm not sure the VA is to blame on this problem. Unless I read it wrong, these are suicides by members currently serving, not folks that have separated. This is a problem we need to address by better understanding the challenges folks are facing and not just add more briefings or CBT's. Statistics fail to capture those 1% who have reached their breaking point.

All too often the servicemember comes home from a deployment to find his wife and money gone. Add that on top of the combat stress and it's a lot to handle.

Never in the history of the nation has it asked so much from so few for so long. Apply that much stress for that long, and stuff starts breaking.

Shack. I know guys that have done upwards of 4 deployments in their first tour, only to be given the good deal 14 month IA on their shore tour immediatley after. And that shore tour is just a follow on to fleet life, 60 hour work weeks and multiple detachments away from home. An Army buddy of mine has been in/out of Iraq and the 'Stan something over 9 times since 2003.

The powers that be can't seem to wrap their mind around this. Their answer, add one more annual suicide awareness brief (to the 14 we already get). This is a volunteer force, and a lot of the volunteers are massing for a mass exodus here real soon.

I've lost count of the number of suicides/attempts I've seen in commands around me, or with friends. A friend of mine from my first cruise decided to take his own life...

This is primarily why I retired from the military. Second reason is I enjoy flying and want to continue this as a career.

We are approaching our 10 year anniversary of 9/11. The ops tempo has been insane ever since. It honestly doesn't surprise me that the suicide rate is as high as it is now. It isn't that the troops are weak, but they've been away from their families multiple times for a year plus on deployments. As soon as they get home, they are already have their next deployment on the books.

And the government thinks we should continue the tempo with less manpower.

They should make it easier for people to exit the military when they want to instead of the long commitments. I know they need to plan around what soldiers are available, etc. but I think they should shorten the commitment terms so people can leave if they need to without it being a big debacle.
