AH! The return (or is it the birth) of the GuppyHawk!

In any case - I'm glad the aircrew are safe.

The T-45 Goshawk is a small Naval jet used for aircraft carrier landing training. The first T-45 aircraft arrived at Pensacola NAS in 2008 as replacements for the aging T-2 Buckeye aircraft that previously filled the carrier training role.
"It’s very unusual," Nichols said about a T-45 crashing. "I really don’t remember one in quite a while."
I don't think the PAO has been around very long...

Glad they both got out.

I think that's the first loss of a tailhook jet in the squadron's roughly 40 years of flying them.

As near as I can remember 86 hasn't had anything with a tailhook in a few years. They got rid of their A-4s and T-2's a long time ago, and just recently start flying T-45's as a future replacement to the T-39 (which they have lost recently). I could be way off...

I don't know what the syllabus looks like now, but the T-39s and their predecessors were used for navigation and air-air radar training. The studs finished in the A-4, T-2, and now, apparently, the T-45, to get them used to a G-suit, mask, and tactical jet before they were sent on to the FRS. There might have been a gap when they tried send the newly minted NFOs to the FRS straight from the T-39. It's been a long time for me and I could be off as well.

No, they were flying T-2C's right up until they got the T-45's. My old boss flew T-2's with them not to long ago.

I got the word about what happened, not for public consumption though. Glad they both got out.
