Default Tri-Care (and other DOD privledges) in the Atlanta Area

As a retiree preparing to move to the Atlanta area I'm researching health care options. My family is currently using Tri-Care Prime. We're near Eglin/Hurlburt, but each of us has a primary care manager off-base.

My questions are for those who are retired living in Atlanta:
  • If you're using Tri-Care which plan are you on?
  • Do you have any problem getting the doctor you want?
  • What, if any, services do you receive from military installations in the Atlanta area (e.g. Fort McPherson)?
And while I'm on the topic of the Atlanta area--do Dobbins, Ft. McPherson, or Ft. Gillem have commissaries?

Thanks ahead of time.

GG:

Here's some commissary info. Looks like the 2 forts do have commissaries.

Good news and bad news...

1. Tri-care is a piece of cake in the NW Atlanta metro area. 10 years ago, not so much but it is nice now. You won't have any problems finding docs. I am retired and my primary care is the off base.

2. Fort Mac and Gillem are both on the BRAC list and are closing - including the commissaries. Dobbins has a small AAFES but is pushing hard to have a comm. and a large expansion of the AAFES. Rumor has it, that the MILCON was approved but who knows.

3. NAS Atlanta (shares runway with Dobbins) is closing also and taking their clinic and pharmacy with them.

BTW, both the Army and the Navy have great facilities on Lake Allatoona to include cabins and campers. It can be a nice temporary place to hang out when you arrive.

Thanks for the local info. Curious...as a relatively new retiree and not being very experienced working with the tricare system, does it make a difference in how many docs you have as options in the area if you're using Standard or Prime? I'd guess that you'd have more options with Standard, but I'm not sure. I'll have to check the tricare site and maybe they have a list of available providers.
