Default Harvard Business School TV Program

I'm sitting here watching TV, the program is about Harvard Business School and how difficult it is. One of the students explained about how each day the professor would call on any student to explain and answer a case study they were to study the night before. Each student explained how they would pray they would not be selected to answer the case study "in front of everyone" (Oh my God!)...Some of the interviewee's are very successful, wealthy CEO types today, and they still "cringe" at the thought of being called on!! **** they had all night to prepare, We as Military Pilots had zero time to prepare for the morning stand-up and the consequences of screwing it up were far more devastating than some business school weenie!! There was a guy in my class who ended up washing out because He screwed up the morning stand-up in grand fashion! The morale of the story, be very proud of what you do as a military aviator...what we went through pales in comparison with what most people can even imagine. Here are the brightest business people in the world whining and peeing in their pants about being singled out to answer a case study....Try answering a complex emergency scenario with some USEM breathing down your neck, just waiting for you to screw up just one little detail!!! Oh, then go fly a T-38 3 feet from another at 500 knots sideways!!!......

Something us Navy guys never had to worry about Hell, many of my student can't even answer EP's or questions one on one, I can't imagine in a group setting.

At Laughlin we also had to be able to recite Notes, Warnings, and Cautions from memory. Almost as bad as the Stand-Ups.

I saw the same show on Harvard Business School on CNBC. I am also a military aviator that graduated through a business program where the Socratic method was quite popluar. Keep in mind that memorization and recital is a little different than forming an opinion and developing an argument based on case study... Also, those MBA candidates are presenting their opinions to some of the smartest minds in the World.

That being said, I was never very good at either...

3 Wire,

I meant no disrespect for the HBS studs, just had to laugh at how they were so stressed about being "put under the spotlight" meanwhile most of them are much older and exerienced compared to your average UPT stud.
I attended law school for a year and we did the same thing...read a few cases the night before, and be prepared to comment on it tomorrow. Many of my classmates would get very stressed about being called on...part of the reason I left law school...I couldn't stand being around these whiners/pingers....(wish I finished now, would have been a lucrative side job!!!!) BTW whenever these pingers would start belly-aching I would tell them "Chill out, its not like your landing a jet on an aircraft carrier" I use this saying all the time and my wife hates it!!! Nothing but props to you Navy Types

Default Harvard pilot school?

Law and Business schools are quite aware that students will not remember details about specific cases after graduation -- that's what libraries are for. The Socratic method is aimed mostly at teaching a skill: the ability to pontificate and argue convincingly with little or no notice. Military pilots don't need this skill, unless they are headed for staff jobs.

"Pontificate"... now that is one I never thought I would hear on this forum. And I thought it was played out to speak bombastically.
