Moose,

Thanks for your help. It sounds like McChord is a good place, especially for someone living around the Puget Sound area. Are there any negative aspects you have found?

OK, I'll be the bad guy. Either you want to be a military pilot, or you don't. If you do, go for it - if you don't, don't. If you want quality of life - don't. Not that USAF Reserve pilots don't have decent quality of life, but there are always bad deals and painful taskings that are only worth it if you are of the mindset that these are the things that go with being a military pilot.

Mem has made a good point. I can only tell you what I think about it, and everyones experience is different. What I can say if you are looking for a full time job, the reserves (at least at McChord) is not the way to goal. Although orders are around it is not an employment program, it is in fact a reserve squadron. But it is possible to make it by on reserve duty, you just have to be willing to come in alot.

I personally love it. I went the long route of civlian to reserve pilot and it was definetly the right choice for me. I love the jet, I love the variety of missions, and I love the people in the wing. However I can say that being gone all the time does drain you, and can be a strain on family life. Feel free to send me a private message and I can give you my phone number if you want to talk more in depth.

Good luck with what ever you do.

Is it true that one can get LASIK, and as long as you wait the three months and everything is fine, you are good to go?

I'll suggest you take my advice from post #4.

There are several LASIK/PRK threads on Basesops.

I think it's 6 months. You must also meet strict pre-op requirements and have several post-op checkups.

Here's a tip for those rushing units. When you go to your interview, and you bring beers, don't put a picture of your regional jet cockpit hero shot on the bottle. YGTBFSM!!! Phags!!!

C-17 Reserves...

You are at least looking at the guard /Reserve which is a good idea. But you are still signing a AF contract with a 10 year obligation regardless. You have been given some great info already. As time continues, so will additional C-17 bases, they are such an asset. I can help you with some additional info that I stumbled onto during UPT training. try searching for this website: www.hamletthouse.com and click kennys pilot section. or try this link: Pilot Section , that goes directly to his link. Now basically there is a ton of info that this guy wrote about from his first days to now about C-17 flying. he has links and a ton of gouge that you can look over to give you the skinny of that particular track. Good Luck.... Go Guard!
