Civilian to Military
Excuse my ignorance/lack of information on the subject:
I am a civilian Pilot that just got hired on by a major. I have always wanted to fly for the military but for a number of reasons I could not do it(Eyesight).
Lately I have been hearing that the vision requirements have gone way down as far as getting into flying for the military. My questions are:
Where can I find the EXACT vision requirements?
What is the maximum age at which you can join the Air National Guard?
Do I have to be a resident of the state in which I want to join the Guard in?
Any info on these questions would be greatly appreciated! Any steering in the right direction would be as well.
Thank you

No, you don't need to be a resident of the state the Guard unit is in but it probably helps. It can be very difficult to commute to your Guard unit and doing that defeats many of the QOL benefits that are available by joining the Guard (even more so if you fly for an airline, too).
Here's some of the info you need regarding USAF/ANG pilot training:
Before Selection for Undergraduate Pilot Training:
Minimum Requirements
Under the age of 30 prior to beginning flight training
Minimum 20/70 vision correctable to 20/20 without color blindness. Laser vision correction (RK, Lasik etc.) is disqualifying
Bachelors Degree
Applicant must be physically fit and able to run 1½ miles in under 12 minutes
Meet Air Force height and weight requirements
Minimum AFOQT scores (see below).
Air Force Officer
Qualifying TestBefore applicants can be considered for Undergraduate Pilot Training they must have taken the AFOQT. This is a five-part test given at bases and recruiting offices around the country. You must take the AFOQT before applying for UPT.
The five sections and minimum scores for each are:
Pilot--25
Navigator--10
Academic Aptitude--0
Verbal--15
Quantitative--10
Combined pilot\navigator scores must total 50.
Before applicants can be considered for Undergraduate Pilot Training you will be required to take the BATS test. This tests your hand-eye coordination. The test is much like a video game with several different tests. The test scores are combined into a single score. Some sections may be weighted more heavily than others.
Good Luck.

It would be a nice compliment to your airline career if you can meet the reqs and are willing to make the sacrifice of time...there is no better safety net for someone in a troubled industy. Oh wait...a rich supermodel wife would be better than the reserves/guard...they would be a distant second to that.

Thanks for the responses so far guys........the only thing I am really worried about is my vision. It is way worse than 20/70 but with contacts I am 20/15. I would be willing to get lasik or whatever procedure, if that gives me the opportunity to be competitive. I really want to do this. Any more info would be greatly appreciated

PRK (not LASIK) has been allowed for navy/usmc pilot candidates...I would suspect the USAF might go for that also. Check into it.
The rules change often, don't rely on internet gouge, try to get hold of a pilot recruiter.

Hey all you military pilots out there. Do any of you know of some guard/reserve units needing pilots this year? I'm currently enlisted as a (gasp) A-10 crew chief and have my bachelor's and master's in aviation. I'm also flying for a regional right now but am doing that to sort of wait for the military thing to go through. I've interviewed with one unit last year and am trying to get on again, but want back up options. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to PM me.
