Default PBS series "Carrier"

I'd be interested to hear the opinions of former Navy pilots or carrier crew members to the PBS mini series "Carrier." I have seen 6 episodes now and am very impressed with it. http://www.pbs.org/weta/carrier/

After watching a couple of episodes I'm now happier than ever that I took orders to Bahrain for my last Sea Duty. I've done three ships and am in no way interested in going back. The snot-nosed, unruly, young sailors as well as the QOL at sea are not enjoyable. The series is dead-on in describing life aboard a carrier. I think the CMC is the worst example of a member of the Chief's Mess I've ever seen. I don't think he could put a coherent sentence together in order to keep the ship from sinking. JMO.

After watching it, I am glad I got out before my disassociated sea tour. I recognized 3 of the shooters from my former squadron.

The Navy does have a good PR machine. They seem to embrace it. This show and there was a good one about Marines also on PBS.

Its not just a job, its a job on a boat.

In one scene an F/A-18 pilot is just about to get in for a mission of Mosul. He is walking around the jet and looks in a panel below the cockpit on the left side. The panel door is being held open by a red shirt guy. The pilot looks at a few things quickly, gives the red shirt a thumbs up and the red shirt shuts the panel.

The red shirt guy is a weapons guy right? So I figure he has set up a weapon panel and the pilot is just verifying that it is set up. Is that about right? Any F/A-18 guys out there?

I think it's a great program. Doesn't always show the Navy in a very positive light. That kinda makes me wonder if there would have been any retribution against the nay sayers or even against the commanders that let it happen on their watch. I mean, why did the Navy even allow such a program to be shot?

A kid I used to mentor has a few short clips. I saw him at least four times and may have missed a few. He's not a pro-Navy guy but I got a good laugh as he's in the polly wog scene.

Anyhow, it's a great series and the night F18 landings in heavy seas make my recurrent next week look like childs play.

i too am glad I got to be a pilot and never had to fly on/off the boat, or do a dissociated sea tour. I also agree that this shooting of life on a carrier seems to be more real than any previous documentary. Truly shows some of the undesirables/low moral at times/"forced fun" etc....aspects of being on a boat.

Looking around the PBS site, I noticed that this was all shot 2.5-3 years ago: May 7 - Nov 8, 2005

Looks pretty accurate. Sometimes you just want to say - talk about things at your pay level. That is something that we use to tell the young Marines when interviewing with media. I'm enjoying seeing how the Marine squadron is interacting with the Navy >G< Enjoying the flying scenes of course. Got to give it to those guys on the night pitching decks. Hats off!

The navy is usually scrupulous about controlling media/entertainment opportunities involving their facilities. I would assume that they deliberately allowed this for whatever reason. Or maybe the PAO assigned to review all the footage went rogue
