PBS series "Carrier"
#31
As a former F-14 driver and A-4 instructor/driver I had a trap on every carrier the Navy owned except the Midway and Independance. Latest carrier the Navy had at that time was the Vinson CVN-70. I doubt there is one naval aviator out there who has 1000 NIGHT TRAPS. I had 632 total and about one quarter of those were at night.
Once when we were doing car-quals on the Nimitz and we were just starting to let women do this kind of flying we were starting to wrap things up because we were running out of sea room. As an LSO (Landing Signal Officer) I had to get 2 more traps on this girl to get here qualled. After her last cat shot the captain of the ship came on the radio and said " Echoe 5 your cleared downwind and the world's mightest warship awaits your arrival.
She qualled. Today she flies for Delta.
Really miss the F-14 and the A-4 Skyhawk. Especially the "F" version.
