Questions for Air National Guard members
Hi, I have a questions about the Air National Guard and was hoping I could get a few insights from current members before I go talk to a recruiter.
I'm thinking about joining a unit in PA that has an opening for A-10 pilots. I'm really interested but I'd like to know more about what it will be like if I join.
What kind of time commitment will be required?
What are my chances of going to Iraq?
Is there any guarantee of getting a flight spot before I join?
What pros or cons are there to joining?
Any other advice is appreciated. Thank you.

10 years after you graduate UPT...10 years of monthly drill weekends plus an extra 2-4 days at least per month.

Iraq specifically..who knows. We will be in and out of the desert for the next 50 years, if that bothers you...don't bother, you are signing up to blow stuff up, and A-10's do a lot of that.

Yes, once the board confirms your flight slot, you will sign on the dotted line the next day.
What pros or cons are there to joining?
I'll only give pro's: Blowing up bad guys, serving your country, career stability, having a backup if you get furloughed from your airline, being considered a "military" guy when you go to get hired at a major, accruing seniority at your Regional during the 2 years you're in OTS/UPT/RTU, your wife gets to shop at the BX and Commissary, veterans benefits up the wazzu, etc...
Any other advice is appreciated. Thank you.
Make sure you have no problem with going to war. ESPECIALLY since you want to fly A-10's. Even Heavy guys should have no problem with being deployed and the occupational hazard. Country first, Career second.

Brac
Hopeful,
Be careful there. That unit is scheduled to close in the next couple of years due to BRAC.
Got this off the web: (http://www.af.mil/brac/pennsylvania....or-Naval-23243)
Naval Air Station Willow Grove (Willow Grove Joint Reserve Base) -- Close
Manpower: The installation will lose 865 military and 362 civilians and gain no military and no civilians for a total loss of 865 military and 362 civilians.
Air Force Recommendations: NONE.
Joint Recommendations:
Move assigned A-10 aircraft to Boise Air Terminal Air Guard Station, Idaho (3 aircraft); Martin State Airport AGS, Md., (3 aircraft); and to Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., (3 aircraft); and retire (6 aircraft). Retire assigned C-130E aircraft. Move AFRC ECS manpower to Eglin AFB, Fla. The 270th Engineering Installation Squadron (ANG) remains as an enclave.
PM me if you have any more questions. I had the honor of flying Hawgs for 20 years.
