Airline hiring and military slots

Why did they change it?
Would it be correct to say that the two-track system was a victory for the beancounters at the expense of AF assignment flexibility? They used to claim that, if necessary, any UPT graduate could be assigned to any airplane with a reasonable chance that he would pass the training. (During the Viet Nam ramp-up, some classes got almost 100% fighters, and later the AF nabbed several tanker pilots for the F-105). But that flexibility required that all UPT students pass the full T-38 syllabus, including 4-ship formation, or be washed out -- which probably cost a lot of money.

Well...I will say when I went thru in 86.... AFTER assignment night.....FAR/IP guys got 4 ship form rides... and us TTB types got extra instrument sorties.... 4 or 5 i believe. Plus an extra cross country.
We had three or 4 guys wash for airsickness in my flight alone.... in those days our classes of 60+ were broken into two flights...
Except for the one girl in our class...all of our studs....even us lowely Herc drivers were pretty damn good sticks if I do say so myself.
Here is an Ironic twist of things for ya... when I graduated there had been at least ONE B-52 drop in every class for over 10 years..... well in my T-37 flight we had an IP by the name of D. Moralez... short little hispanic guy that could fly the crap out of a tweet... anyways I flew a few times with him.. and by god he had me convinced to fly BUFFs before it was over with.... so.. I put them on my dream sheet....hell Hercs was like 12th on my list....... whamo... NOT one BUFF in our class. LOL
Our biggest problem in our wing at POPE wasnt the new guys and their skills.... it was the Majors who had been out of the cockpit for 6-8 years and were coming back...... and even then they didnt fly much.... I did a rotation to Europe with one guy when I was just about ready for AC school .. and that guy was scary. He got pulled 4 weeks into the rotation becuase I complained to the Chief Pilot and he arranged for us to get a no notice line check our next trip out..... I finished up flying the rest of the 9 weeks in the left seat with the EP in the right seat.

So so true. And now I'm one of those guys. Sort of. At least I know it, though perhaps that just frustrates me more. Nothing worse than knowing I used to be able to do that.

Hacker, one of the minor legends of the C17 community (not in a good way) was a guy who washed out of Seymour and somehow managed to end up in a 17. I think he's now living in a broken down van by the river, but here's one mobility pilot saying "thanks" to ACC for that one.

80% of our losses were in tweets.... but in our flight the "white rocket" had its victims as well.
Just to clarify...we had some majors at LTC's who could flact fly the **** out of the airplane..... but during one particular year we had like 8 majors come back to the herc after being out of the cockpit for 2 or more tours..... and well their heart just didnt seem to be in it.... whew...like I said scary.

As someone who finished bottom of the class in tweets but was fortunate enough to be reborn in the 38 and come out 4th over all I've always thought that the two-track was a waste. It was kind of ironic the fighter wanna bes smoked tweets and were walking the walk but the two biggest tools in my class ended up as 135 3rd pilots while the majority of the rest of us ended up with our first or second picks. The IP's at the time (early 90's) kept saying there were those who came alive in 38s and went on to be some pretty good sticks in whatever fighter they went off two. As far as washouts we had a couple in tweets but lost 4 prior to 38 solo formation - as for the rest of us we made it the duration.
