US Customs & Border Patrol Pilots

The guys that I know that are flying for them and the ones who are hired but awaiting location assignment before accepting are all excited about the job. It definitely seems to be one of the best gov't flying jobs out there.
Have you read this entire thread? There is another aviation forum out there (Army related) that has a lot of information on the CBP process too.
Good luck if you are applying or have applied.

I talked to one of the pilots at the Yuma, AZ airshow a few years ago. He had come from within the Border Patrol (at the time) and said that it was very hard to get on as a straight civilian pilot now due to the scoring system. I also had the chance to talk to one of the Citation crews out of San Diego one day when they landed at El Centrofor gas during a training mission. I was canceled so I went over to base operations and trade chit-chat with them. Again - they all seemed happy with the job.

Yes - it seems very competitive now. The guys that I know who got picked up all had over a 100 score. The last one I know was a former Navy Helo pilot, transitioned to the Hornet - so he could answer yes to all the helo based questions and had the radar intercept experience. He is the guy waiting for the location assignment but thought that he would be attending the March FLETC class.

I'm surprised to see this thread abruptly stopped a year ago today. I just put in my application for their OKC-based aircraft instructor pilot. I'd love to hear from anyone who's been through the process in the last year to see if things are similar to this thread or very different. I'm a current Herk guy with just over 5000TT, flight examiner, combat, NVG, etc. I'll be retiring as an O-4 so probably no vet preference for me. (not expecting 10% disability). Many of the stats CBP seems to look for based on this thread, but I'm wondering if it all still applies. Any current information on CBP in general and this job in specific?

I got an email today with a NOR of 95 for the flight instructor position in Oklahoma. My VA claim hasn't been completed so no preference was added since I'm retiring as an O4. Reading other CBP threads it seems interviews go out anywhere in the mid 80s to high 90s depending on the job, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. The thing I don't like is there will be an email if my app gets forwarded but no email if they don't forward it. That means I'm stuck wondering if I didn't make the cut of if they haven't gotten around to emailing yet. Here's hoping they just email me for an interview and end the suspense.

Doomed TX--what's the VA threshold for veteran's preference for O4+?
I assume you're looking for some threshold of disability to claim it, but obviously one still has to be physically fit enough to fly. I've heard a few different gouge numbers out there.

You bring up an interesting point to which I've never gotten a satisfactory answer. The VA reps say that no one--not even another federal agency--will know why you are VA disabled, but I have to wonder if that doesn't hurt you somehow in a flying job. In any event I'm waiting to see if a 95 gets me anywhere.

The VA's website has it well documented the requirements for the Disabled Vet's Preference.
