As a MEDEVAC guy I did a lot of external hoist training and a bit of sling-load operations too. I haven't done much rappelling training, but essentially all you do is hold a high OGE hover much the same way you do external rescue hoist work.

As far as combat time goes, I only did one tour in Iraq. I was over there at the beginning of the war and saw quite a bit of combat flight time below 100' AGL going in and picking up wounded.

As far as getting a 99 score, I think what hurt me was I only had 1400 hours and required a waiver for the total time. That probably knocked a few points off of my score. Also I don't have any Law Enforcement exp.

Ah.....the flight time - I guess that is what could have knocked a few off in you needed a waiver. You certainly have everything else covered! I think the CBP would be a great job so best of luck in the future.

Don't look at my stats as what all military helo guys look like. I had a great opportunity to get some good unique experience. There are a lot of military guys out there who never had a chance to do anything more than ass-n-trash flying. If CBP is your goal, go for it. The CBP needs diversity and is not looking for a bunch a cookie-cutter military pilots. I say put in your application and join the wait.

-Hope is not a method.

I agree with dustoffdax! Don't let others' experience keep you from applying or thinking you don't have a chance. When I went through the interview they told me exactly what he is saying. They don't want only "one" type of pilot applying and working for CBP. They want diversity in professional experience. Keep pushing, you definately have a chance. It may mean you get a job in Law Enforcement to help pad your resume, but there are other avenues than just the military. Good luck!

Default National Guard and Reserve Duty

Hey all,

Is there anyone who could shed light on what happens if you get an offer from CBP/DHS and are unable to accept because of a Reserve or Guard activation? Do they have to hold the offer for you until the end of your activation?

Thanks,
-DD

Hrm, got my NOR. Got an 85. Doesn't seem all that hot.

Would it seem silly to think about just going out and getting a rotary rating?

The good news of this is that you can resubmit as things change, no need to wait to reapply.

I heard a couple of guys getting calls for interviews in the mid 80's. Nothing confirmed, just what I heard.

I got a 90 a month ago. I know it's not that good, but I didn't know what they are looking for. I haven't heard anything back from them.
