US Customs & Border Patrol Pilots

I am thinking because you are in a no LE position you are out of luck going to other A/C, unless you became and instructor in OKC. I think that you need to be an AIA to fly in the A/C cause you may be called upon to arrest someone.

I flew for the ABQ AIR BRANCH back in 1988-90. Every year we'd get "possible furlough" notices due to government budget cuts. So we sweated whether we'd have jobs or not until more funding was available. So even in government jobs, the possiblity of being "furloughed" is still there. They were cutting our flying hours at the branch all the time, but I still managed to get some good time in. Maybe things have changed since then, but we always had pilots looking to bail to the majors. If you're going to FLETC in BQK, be sure to take a LOT of bug spray with you along with a nose plug. Brunswick, GA, is BRUTAL with vicious biting "no see um's" and smelly pulp mills. I lived there for a while and never got used to all the biting bugs.

I would say that 9/11 changed many things when it came to funding agreed? The CBP is ADDING 4,000 more positions just this year aren't they? The influx of funding under Homeland Security seems almost unparalled!
I'm not going to FLETC too old. But don't worry - you NEVER have to tell an East Coast Marine about bug spray (we use the gov't issued type that just removes your skin) or 'no see ums'. We have ALL either lived, worked, training, etc.... at Parris Island, MCAS Beaufort, MCB Camp Lejuene or MCB Quantico

What's up guys? Im new to this forum and you cats seem to have some good info on the CBP hiring process. I recently got a phone call to set up the interview in OKC on March 2nd. Just seeing if you guys had any helpful tips. I am a low time manned pilot but high time unmanned pilot. UAS is pretty much the majority of my experience. Hoping that helps me get in the door.

Welcome, B Unit! I interviewed in OKC back in December and still waiting to hear. Very low key, just relax and you'll do great. During my interview, they talked about needing UAV guys. I believe having unmanned time will be a big benefit for you, especially if you're willing to go to Sierra Vista, AZ or Grand Forks, ND. You should have a big foot in the door.

GRB -
It seems that you are in contention for a UAV spot to me.
The part that is confusing me though is that you say you are 46 years old.
I was under the very strong assumption that you couldn't be over 40 years old and fly for the CBP.
Smart people........is this why he is being consider for a UAV position and not a actual flying aircraft position?
Do UAV pilots not have to be Federal LE and go through FLETC?

Hi!
I got this email:
NOTICE OF RESULTS
MINNEAPOLIS HIRING CENTER
Date Issued:January 28, 2009
Eligibility Expires: December 2009
This is a record of your application for Federal Employment in the occupation shown below. This is not a job offer.
In the event you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by the Headquarters Air and Marine Human
Resources Branch.
Series - Position Title: 2181 - PILOT- UAS PREDATOR B (MQ-9)
Vacancy ID Number: 225581
Announcement Number: MHCAMDE-225581-JMC
Full-time Employment: Yes
Geographic Availability:
Riverside, CA
Grand Forks, ND
Sierra Vista, AZ
Veteran Preference: 5 Points - TP (adjudicated)
Specialty Code: 001
Specialty Title: PILOT- UAS PREDATOR B (MQ-9)
Grade: 11
Rating: 97
I assume it means I'm still in contention, but for what, is very unclear to me now.
I have about 1000 helo (Hueys), and about 3000 MEJet, with my ATP-MEL and Comm/Inst-Helo. I have NO LEO background, and I'm 46 yrs old.
I assume I would be flying a UAV. Could I also be flying FW or helo? Or Both? I think I would be deployed overseas for the UAV job part of the time? True also if I fly FW and/or RW?
Any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Oh, and from the above locations, I would choose GFK, because it is an easier to commute to GRB. I know the commute would suck, but I need a job!
THANK YOU!

PS-I'm going to look into the new vacancy notice and apply via that one also.
PPS-PM me if there's stuff U can tell me, but don't want to make it public.

ATP - be sure you appliy to the non law enforcement position. You are over the age limit of 40 (unless you have prior Federal LEO time under 6c), and will be disqualified.
This job is not commutable - you work 5 days a week during office hours, so you will need to move to GF or SV. You might deploy on a couple weeks of a detail at most, but with UAV's I doubt it. You might also get to ride in the helos or fixed wing, we take up mechanics and admin staff from time to time as passengers/employees for official business and patrols. Transition for a FW or RW flying job is not likely if you don't attend FLETC - but anyone under the age limit that comes into this position could certainly attempt an "in status" transition when the job announcement came up - I think it is a good way to get your foot in the door. All personal opinion...
Prior UAV time and a willingness to fly the UAV will be good things to mention in the interview. It sounded like the last round had several offers declined due to UAV assignments.

Mythbuster, I sure hope it works out. I certainly don't mind flying UAS. I'm not going to lie and tell you I wouldn't wanna fly manned also. To be perfectly honest I would fly anything that they want me to. Sierra Vista is definately not a problem considering I already live and work here in the Unmanned world.
I'm really hoping for the LE positions cause I'm planning to be in it for the long haul. It's interesting, i found out through this thread and some other web search that they even posted a non LE UAS position. # 225581 is non LE and # 225340 is LE. It was by dumb luck that I applied for the latter.
Anyway, I also heard some guys say that CBP wil still keep you current in manned if you accept UAS. Thats pretty cool.

RW or not.....
A couple threads back, someone mentioned the idea of getting a RW rating in order to improve one's chances of employment. Has it been confirmed that adding a RW private or commercial, after a NOR score has already been issued, will impact a previously submitted application/resume? Also, do invitations for interviews begin once the announcement closes (May '09) or can they occur before the closeout? Thanks to anyone who can provide clarification on these questions.
