GOTBOOST: When I called Oklahoma on the 15th of Jan. I was told there's been some delay and the tentative offers will not be coming till beginning to mid Feb. However the call that I received on Jan 23 for the UAV program from a 202 area code (DC) was not "the offer". She told me that if I say yes then I should receive a "tentative offer" by mid-February. So I guess you get a "call" before the "CALL." I was not aware of that. Thus the answer I got from Oklahoma (beginning to mid Feb) was to the Tentative Offer (THE CALL) not an intermediary offer (the call). To tell the truth I've been kinda in a state of confusion of how this hiring system works since I originally applied on line.
Did they ask you about the predator program during your interview?
We spent a few minutes on the subject during my interview.

What I did find on UsaJobs is the latest job announcement which ends May 15, 2009 for 2181. I'll copy and paste part of the job description: "This is an open continuous announcement which will establish an inventory of applicants interested in a career as an Aircraft (including UAS Predator A and B)/Airplane/Helicopter Pilot (Air Interdiction Agent) with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Air and Marine, throughout the United States."
Thus it seems Manned or Unmanned you'd still be a 2181.
I have to call DC tomorrow with my answer (if the job is still up for grabs) and I'll ask.
The only thing they told me at the interview is that they're stepping up the UAS program and would I be interested if there's an opening. I said yes (came back to haunt me) but did mention that I don't know anything about Unmanned vehicles. He scribbled something down and that was the end of it...less than 20 sec on the topic.
One of my CBP acquaintances sent me an email that they're really pushing the UAS program and "forcing" (his word) some of the current pilots into it. I don't know if this is a fact or just his perspective but there it is.

Interesting. I've been hired into a location as an AIA. However, it wasn't my first choice. I've looked into switching from my branch into one of the UAS locations. I made a call to one of the head guys at headquarters, and he basically told me that I couldn't switch. He mentioned that they were not really hiring non-UAV people from off of the street. And that once I was at my branch after training, I could put in to fly UAVs. I'm not really gung-ho on flying a remote control airplane, but I greatly prefer the location of the UAS branch. If someone has some good advice on how to make that switch before FLETC, I'm all ears....
My BI is done, and my EOD is in a couple of months.
Thanks

I got the call today from DC and accepted the offer.
This was a "will you accept this position call."
Here are the details.
Sierra Vista UAV
AIA position 2181 to 1881
3 Year lock in position
I was told I would be kept current on an airplane.
I was also told this was the only position I would be offered as they only have a need for helicopter pilots at this point.
Official offers letter will come out in February.
Planning a Jun or Jul EOD date dependent on BI.
I will post up more info when I get it.

I also got a call from D.C. today wondering if I wanted to move my EOD/FLETC date up. I had to decline, but sounds like things are a movin and a shakin in D.C. I am in June FLETC so maybe see you there. Congratulations again....

Congrats, that was one of the locations I turned down. Really I didn't call back in time to be perfectly honest. Interesting, they said that UAV's are the only position open for FW guys now. hmmm I'm curious how long that will be accurate. I wonder if they are getting so much resistance from the rank and file pilots, that is a tactic to get people through the doors by telling them it is this or nothing. The shape of the economy is also on their side. It is still a good job though. If the UAV's were in the right location, I would jump on them. Key word is RIGHT LOCATION!!!
