I'm just about to the hiring mins for this job and thinking of applying, but I'd like to know what would make me more competitive for this position? I know being in the military will make you more competitive, but I can't do that because of a medical condition and I've tried to go that route a few times (all rejected). I've got all but have the 1500 TT that is required (1470 TT as of last night and 135 mins). I've heard that if you have your rotor licenses in addition to fixed wing, you will be more preferred than those who do not. Is that true? Do I have a chance at this?

Half of the tt required can be waived (750) if you have experience with things like low level flying, NVGs, formation flying, CFI, or multi engine time. From what I understand, military and/LE time is very helpful but at the local unit I visited, they said that about half of their guys had no military time. Not sure whether they have LE experience though.... if I were you, I'd just apply and see what happens. I'm told that being dual rated helps but will not stop you from being hired. If your app is filled out correctly, you'll get an email with a "score" on it. The score is the subject of much debate and nobody seems to know what effect it makes in the end. If you are prior service, you'll get 5 extra points on your score. For example I got a 94 which means if I hadn't been in the military, I'd have gotten a 89. Good luck...

p.s.

This is a very long a frustrating process and you'll find more info at APTAP.org

I went through a similar process with the FAA just prior to graduating from SIU a long time ago. I did get called for an interview, and got cancelled due to lousy weather at the time (Jan ice storms in IL will do that) and tried to get rescheduled, and never got called back.... If there's one thing the government is know for is PAPERWORK... LOL

Good luck too West and thanks for the reply!

The AIA announcement on usajobs is back up. The Job number is 221185. Rumor is you can reapply under the new job number, even if you applied under the old one. Good luck all....

I saw this too. A quick question, does anyone know off the top of their head or have a list of the bases that have fixed-wing positions? The last time I sent in my app I remember they would only let you pick 5 bases and I but down my most desired locations but don't know if some of them are roto only. Anybody got any info? Thanks

Anybody know if you have to apply again if you already had one on file?

Did anyone get a email from Homeland Security HR that announced the vacancy for CBP AIA? I had previously applied a couple of months ago and out of the blue I got an email that asked to reapply.

Anyone think it is too early to apply for an April 2010 start date? A buddy said he went 15 months from application to out of the army and starting with CBP.

Absolutely not! Apply and get in the mix. It is taking about 12 months from application to EOD date for me. My FLETC class is 15 months from application to start. Partly because my wife is having a child over the first class date. The HR people were very helpful that way. I would definately apply. Don't wait, the sooner you get it in, the sooner you can start that very long process of waiting.

FYI for anyone who, like me, didn't know. You can googel CBP Cass and check your application status with CBP. I checked today and got to see my EOD date. It was nice to see it in an official website for the Government.

To the other guy asking about FW only bases, I don't know where or if that info is available. I am also FW only and got called for three locations. All three also had Helos, but I was offered a FW only job at those locations. Good luck to all, when the call comes it is worth the wait.

I got one too... looks like the starting pay went down for the position, not sure my memory is hazy on that one!
