I went for FW so that is all the gouge I have. Make sure you are prepared to answer HR type interview questions in front of a panel. Your background in law enforcement or military will be asked about extensively. They give you a rundown of the job and ask you if you feel it is right for you. Study part 91 basic VFR and IFR stuff. Get familiar with the sectional again. I watched the old King videos (Marth and John) on airspace and regs. Don't go in cold, it will bite you. Also be ready to fly IFR (holding, approaches, and full missed approaches) and VFR (slow flight, stalls, steep turns, etc.) basically a combo of a Commercial and IFR checkride for fixed wing. Very do - able (not sure how to spell) but thorough. Good Luck....

(been studying all weekend) Anyone know if the Gov't pays twice a month or every two weeks, (24 vs. 26 checks) I forget. Anyone know what Laredo is like as a base for CBP?
I would assume the 1st and 15th of every month.

I am not sure about the paychecks. It isn't a big deal, at least I know I will be getting one. I was in the Gov't about ten years ago and I thought it was 26 paychecks a year. Less money each paycheck, but you get three checks twice a year in certain months. That was nice. Oh well, either way is still going to be nice...

GS employees (which you will be) get paid every 2 weeks.

That is what I thought. That third paycheck twice a year is like found money.

Hello,
I recently applied for the CBP pilot position and hoping for the best.
I don't have any military or L.E. experience so I'm not sure how much of a chance I really have. All of my flying is F.W. mostly part 135 in small piston singles and twins. I have around 3,100 total time and 700 multi. Not sure if this matters but I also have a bachelors degree. Most of my flying has been to the Lake Erie islands into small strips.
Hopefully I can learn something throughout this lengthy process. I wish everyone the best of luck.

Ken

Hey Ken,

I want to first off wish you good luck in your recent application to CBP. I am not sure how many civilian pilots without LE experience they are bringing on. I have two friends that are in your same boat without LE or military and they have yet to be contacted. One of them applied over two months ago. I've heard it is tough without something other than aviation in your background. Good luck though, I hope you hear something...

Me too,
Seems like it would be a great job.
Just curious though, why wouldn't they put military and L.E. experience into the qualifications if that's all they hiring?

Hey Ken,
I didn't say that is all they are hiring. I just can go on what I know. At my interview, there were six guys there, and they all had either Military or LE. My two friends without that experience haven't got an email yet. My guess is, there are people who have been emailed without experience in either, but I haven't heard of any. Good luck, I know if there are others out there without L.E. or military you will hear from them... pose that question also on aptap.org, another great site for this discussion...
