I doubt you have read the PBS guide or manual. If you had, you would know that the PBS DOES apply your preferences and only at the end of the process, if a minimum of flying is not covered then things get unstacked but your avoid pairings and days off ARE respected - at least initially. If you want help bidding - I'm very junior yet got EXACTLY what I wanted, and my desires are very specific - message me here and I'll give you a hand. The pool of pairings is so large compared to the number of pilots, that there is no reason you can't get close to what you want to have.

Are most trips basically 4 days? If based in IAH how many of these trips would you have in a month? Four? Also how many days off in between on average?
Also are there commuter friendly hotels that are cheap if you have to come in the night before or stay the night after?
Thanks just trying to figure this out.

The schedule is generally 4 on and 3 off. The contract requires 2 off - so that varies some. You can waive all that stuff in scheduling though to try and get specific days off in a particularly month. You can not waive Part 117, but you can sometimes take your rest at an outstation.
It took me 2 months to get a commutable line, but I commute a route with lots of flights.

When you make it through SIMS and headed to IAH, private message me and I will give you all that I have for this. There are commuter hotels. There are crashpads.

upgrade
There hasn’t been DFW captain slots for at least the last 2 bids .. are they that fat on pilots?
My dilemma: currently, DFW CRJ FO. Would like to stay w/ CRJ because it’s more familiar than learning a new plane for upgrade.
And, in DFW I can hold a line way quicker than IAD or PHX.
Should I bid for SDF or IAD or even PHX to try to get into upgrade class, then bid back to DFW when the opportunity arises?
Or wait until next month’s bid?
Or... go to the E-jet? I know it’d be biting off a lot more, and I know the classes from last August have yet to even get into sims. So, it’d be awhile. However I’d hold a line nearly immediately and I know the schedules are way more efficient.
Debating what is best... thoughts?
