Thanks for the info everyone! If only Mesa weren't so crappy... Living in PHX it would make sense to not have to commute, but the crazy expensive health insurance is just about a deal breaker

I never understand why people consider Mesa because of the Phoenix base. OK, as an FO, you'll probably get it within a few months.. and hold a line.
But as a Captain, you're going to upgrade on the CRJ into either IAD or DFW.. or switch to the 175 and IAH.
So you're going to have to move or commute.
Even 15-year captains can barely hold a line in Phoenix.. 10-year captain can't even hold PHX on reserve.

Yeah that. Consider the alternative - the most junior captain in PHX at Skywest is just under 6 years.

What this guy said.

For those out there wanting to fly out of PHX and not make the regionals a career, you are better off moving unless you really want to commute. You can always come back later on in your career once you move on to an LCC/ULCC or legacy.

I faced a similar decision when I was starting out. Ultimately, I decided to commute rather than go to Mesa. The main reason is because of the insurance and every time I asked a Mesa pilot their thoughts, they told me to stay where I was and not come to Mesa.

Honestly the decision has worked out great. I ended up going to Envoy and will probably hold the PHX base at AA in 3-4 years. Commuting has sucked, but in a few more years I'll be home based for life.

Look at it this way, would you rather commute at the beginning of your career to a regional you don't plan on staying long or commute at the end of your career when you finally get that call from mainline?

Isn't PHX currently dealing with the displacements of several hundred AA pilots? Like 500 of 1500 pilots to be exact. Who is telling your 3-4 years to hold PHX?

Head over to the AA thread for the latest. It was shrunk by about 500 pilots through natural attrition, no displacements. Guys with about 1 year on property have been able to hold it recently. By the time I flow, the merger effects will be long since settled.

He also got it at only three years with the company. Lucky guy. There hasn't been a vacancy since.
