And you claim ignorance when other users accuse you of trolling. Classy.
Go back and reread his post. These procedures are in our GOM per FAA guidance *hint hint*. Much in the same way that your company now has a cruise checklist to verify the cruise mach number, among other things "suggested" by the FAA. It is very foolish to chalk it up as a training department failure, when you really have no idea as to the motive or reasoning behind it all.

I give up. I know, if anyone questions your airline's procedures, they must be trolling. The point wasn't whether or not it was in your GOM, but why. The answers I got were ridiculous. I was honestly trying to glean why we as an industry are moving away from putting an importance on piloting skill in favor of systems management skills. It's not just a Mesa problem. It's becoming an industry problem. I apologize for the rag on your training department. That's not the direction I intended to head.

You always claim good intentions yet you continually use inflammatory language to make your points. Then you get upset when people don't like your posts. Either you need to learn how to communicate with more finesse or your intentions aren't so pure in the first place. Does it have to be so dramatic?

Even just a few years ago the regionals were solid on 100 hours multi engine MINIMUM. What is it now? 25 hours or something absurdly low? I have an MEI and instructed in a twin to build multi hours. Now that doesn't make me Lord of the skies but I learned a lot teaching in a PA44 that helped with make the transition easier.

Just so there is no confusion, the SAFO referenced is SAFO 13002 and is applicable to all operators. The purpose of the SAFO is actually to encourage hand flying "when appropriate" such as in non-RVSM and low workload conditions. The rule about flying RNAV SIDs and STARs with the autopilot on is purely Mesa's rule because the company believes that RNAV SIDs and STARs are not "low workload" phases of flight. Whether or not more specific direction on the subject came from the PHX CMO is unknown.

Make no mistake - these kind of SOP's are the airline's way of covering their backside. I can't say that I blame them when you've got guys who are being upgraded to CA's that wouldn't meet competitive regional FO minimums 10-15 years ago.

Autopilot must be used when:
1) On an RNAV SID or STAR (I personally interpret this as "when established on a published segment of the procedure")
2) RVSM airspace
3 Non-"low-workload" situations

You're forgetting a very important aspect of today flying environment: Lawsuits.
