I know this is silly but what if on your day of work there is a really bad accident and you are stuck in traffic. Do you call scheduling and explain? Will Mesa scheduling be ok with that? What happens to you? My prior 121 job we would have been yelled at and likely fired if it caused a delay or cancellation (non-union days).

What if you were sick? Would they want you to spread germs to other crew or were they ok with you calling in sick? Sounds like a bad prior 121 gig you had. Mesa is generally ok with things outside your control, but if it's a habit they will make you do the carpet dance. There's a point system for lates and no shows to try to keep it within the above guidelines but I have never messed with it and don't know the specifics. The more timely you let them know, the better. Chief pilot will stick up for you unless you lie about circumstances from what I hear.

I'm having a tough time deciding where to go. I am talking to a couple of different recruiters at the moment. As a company I like Mesa and think I would have good opportunities working there; however, their second year hourly pay as an FO is not near as good as the other line I am considering with similar opportunities etc. $30 vs $36-39
Why is this? Why should I accept less pay, is QOL and stability that much better at Mesa?

I spent 3 months "deciding". Its a tough choice. I recommend actually sitting down and writing a pros and cons of each. Be honest. There are so many variables. QOL, upgrade times, bases, etc.

I chose Mesa myself because of the current fleet, upgrade times and a HUGE factor was DFW. Since I live there.

Good luck.

Edit: Should also mention, don't listen to the loud mouths on this site. The Mesa, PSA, etc. hate on here really should not factor into your decision. Do what is best for you. If that means it takes you 5 or 7 years to upgrade at whatever regional, if its the best fit for you, go for that.

Mesa won't sit down and really negotiate our contract when there are pilots still coming here. The low pay is because of the ease of getting new pilots. It's a catch 22. I don't believe by the time you're hired you'll have a fast upgrade. Unless you have 121 exp you won't get the EJET.

But, I made my choice because of living in base. I didn't want to commute.
Good luck.

If I were choosing now it'd be PSA, Trans or Compass. Not sure why anyone is choosing Mesa at the moment. Unless you catch an upgrade wave, go somewhere where you can be a little more comfortable as an FO. PSA's SAP sounds like a nice QOL boost and Trans has pretty good second year pay. What does Mesa have? Where did you get this QOL and stability idea about Mesa?

-7 more CRJ900s.

-Not sure if I would agree with Mesa being less stable than PSA or TSA
- Mesa is an all 70-79 seat operation
- TSA all 50 seat operation
- PSA has a ton of 200s still.
- Only a matter of time before oil
sky rockets and 50
seaters start being parked again

- We are just now upgrading people
for aircraft #19 of 37.

- I really believe the upgrade time
will stay at 12-16 months here for
atleast a year.

Then again when/if the music stops PSA/compass/TSA would be a much better place to be stuck in the right seat.

I say take the first class you are offered!

Well stated. Look at your control measures. Can you control upgrade? No. Can you control bases, sorta, but no base is forever, can you control pay, sorta, it depends on the current pay rate staying the same.

I would assume living near or in base is a big factor for all. So choose the airline that now can base you at home. Other than that choose one that has a easy commute if you can't be based at home.

Pay is important too. Pro-vice-Con of not living in base then..... What is more important to you? How much would you spend on a crashpad versus saving at home? Does that eat the difference from lesser pay versus more pay to live out of base?

I agree with Prior's comments. Take the first class, have a good attitude and enjoy the ride.

Don't worry about what you fly if you are looking at jet operators. Just get in and get your seniority number. This is a career, a marathon, not a short sprint. Make an informed decision, stick with it, and be ready to work hard.

Hope this helps.

Those who contemplate little have no trouble deciding.....
