Is anyone else not disturbed by this new development? Forcing a new hire to buy an iPad to get a job is bull. Once again Mesa management is leading the charge towards the race to the bottom. I sure hope you new guys know who you're dealing with and are going in with eyes wide open. The quick upgrade won't happen if they can't hire because of this.
The EFB is worth the money.

BTW, I went back about 15 pages in this thread. I see that LAX looks like a TDY assignment. With CLT drawing down, where would a Mesa new hire F/O probably go today??
Also, does a new hire have a choice between the ERJ and CRJ???
Any mesa pilots on here could answer this for me???

They prefer ERJ new-hires have experience in type or at least a good grasp of glass cockpits. That said, you can certainly ask for a spot, but you may have to wait longer for an open class.
Prior to CLT drawing down, most new guys went to Dulles. Charlotte was a little more senior, and Phoenix was most senior. That's all in flux now. Because ORD is just about done and gone to IAD, that's even bigger, so you'd think new-hires might be there even longer. Then again, East coast guys who've long held CLT might now decide to go to IAD, filling that up. When Dallas starts operating around the end of the year/start of next year, that might be a popular option and draw people away from traditionally-hard-to-hold Phoenix.
So it's hard to say, but with the amount of growth and rearranging of chess pieces, you can probably get to any one of the domiciles within a few months (friend of mine got Phoenix 3 months after hire, I'm hoping for the same).
Of course, it's all irrelevant if you're ERJ. Then you'll go to Houston.

Are you still required to carry the Paper version as well or did they get rid of that?

Just read that fractional ownership in at least one Crj 900 is required before you start new hire training!

Then, the more I thought about it, I had to ask myself: How do I value my time?
Are you paid extra hours on top of your monthly guarantee to do jepp revisions at other airlines? We sure weren't at RAH.
Let's say an average month consist of 5 hours of jepp revisions. I'll just throw the number out there that I value my spare time at: $15/hour.
At 5 hours a month that is $75 worth of my time.
How long until a $300 iPad pays for itself in time saved to do other things that I rather do with my spare time?

I used to agree with this thought process.

My problem is not with guys buying the efb, if you want one, knock yourself out. My problem is with the precedent that is being set here. If you want to work as an airline pilot, you now need to invest even more money. It should still be voluntary or provided by the company.
I thought there was a pilot shortage. When will pilots say enough is enough?
