The PILOT shortage is over. The Captain shortage is a not over. Never has ALPA or any news media outlet written a press release of there being a “Captain Shortage”. Those airlines with forced upgrades are not having “as bad” of staffing Captains as the airlines that don’t do forced upgrades.
And Yes MESA has a lot of Captains and was so short F/O’s prior to the pay raises, they’d have their reserve Captains flys as an F/O. That rarely happens anymore. They just now opened up to hire DEC Captains (so they can take on more flying, like the flying Republic can’t do, because they can’t staff their airplanes with Captains). It will make Mesa more profitable flying more routes. Meanwhile Republic delays/cancels deliveries of new E175’s. Who do you think is going to snatch those up to fly? The Regional that is fully staffed!

Reserve question
Can anyone explain the different reserve codes to me? I just finished IOE and have several "RS1" shifts assigned to me coming up. Is that ready reserve? 2hr call out? Where can I find a resource on this? I looked in the GOM and PWA and I can find anything straight forward. Thank you!

I gotta be honest I’m a little nervous about this. My class date is in December and DFW is my first choice for base assignment. Everyone’s talking like the AA flying will disappear in the next 6 months. I would really prefer to not commute.
