I can’t see them ever getting rid of ready reserve. It sucks to do it, but it’s necessary. There are too many instances where a two hour call out just won’t work. If a pilot uses the commuter clause or if a pilot calls out sick when returning to base is another. (I had to do this recently.) I’ve also used the commuter clause before and I know they used a ready reserve pilot to cover me. In fact, I sat ready until that afternoon when my trip came back to IAH from a turn and picked it back up for the outbound overnight.
How many pilots they need sitting ready is another discussion, but it’s unfortunately needed.

I didn’t realize Republic doesn’t have ready reserve. Interesting. Wonder how they make it work. Mesa needs to copy that.

How do majors get by without it? Need to use the commuter clause? Call when you missed your flight, not 15 mins prior to your show time. Give sCrew scheduling a heads up of at least 2 hours prior to your show time. There shouldn’t be any 1 hour out surprises when it comes to sick calls, missed commutes, etc. And the few times there are, they can deal with it. Most majors make it work with short call being a 2.5+ hour call out. I had the same mentality as you at one point, then I realized, “needed” isn’t the right word to describe airport reserve.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate ready reserve and would love to see it gone, but I’ve seen why it can be useful for the airline. Cheers.
