Default NavBlue

ZW uses NavBlue. Yes, they are cheaper than Jeppesen. It takes a little getting used too, but they get you down the approach.

We have ownship on ours. It’s really only useful on taxi charts though.

I figure taxi and enroute would be the most useful.

ForeFlight is basically $100/year. That’s not even 3 months of XM weather. Still much cheaper.

I still fly general aviation. FltPlan Go is a free app that I like. I don't use it to receive ADS-B datalink weather because the airplane I fly receives it on the MFD map page (subscription free). But the app has that capability subscription free because ADS-B is a free service the FAA provides. You just need an ADS-B In receiver. Here's a good one ($400):

Dynon Avionics | DRX Portable Dual Band ADS-B Receiver

An investment of one of these units per aircraft is all it would take. Of course the part 121 operators can't get in the game that easily. The FAA approval process will make an ADS-B In receiver like this one cost more, but it's sure to be much less than a system integrated with the airplane (i.e. NEXRAD weather on the MFD of the E-175).

My initial impression now that I've seen them is mixed.

They won't plot sids or stars on the enroute.

The plates are "foriegn" but in some ways clearer than Jepp and some ways not. For example - part time towers are not designated with an * - instead they have CTAF noted. So if you see CTAF know it's part time.

The document reader, however, is pretty awesome. The search capability is superior to Acrobat (at least with our manuals) and it's fast accessing the manuals. Easy to grasp if you realize "Chapter" means "Book".

Further review:

Bad:
No plotting of sids and stars enroute. Impact minor. Don’t ever use it after the initial look.

PAPI doesn’t say which side of the runway it’s on. Wish it did.

No linking of complex single engine procedure to the SID (that I can find) like Jepp does.

Good:

Part time tower hours posted clearly.
Simpler to read charts in most cases. More consistently organized.

Good/Bad: SIDS and STARS are multiple pages depending on transition. Cleaner charts but could cause confusion if the transition is changed.

Minimums default to LOWEST vis with notes for what makes them higher. JEPPS are opposite, defaults to highest vis with notes as to what makes them lower.

Overall performance is good. Things are easier to find.

Jepps also customize the charts for individual companies, don't remember if YV took advantage of that

I don’t think we do outside of custom complex single engine charts

I’ve downloaded the app and charts. My first impression is the app itself is okay, but the approach charts are TERRIBLE. I’ve found lots of things missing that Jepp charts have. I found an ILS without regular CAT 1 minimums anywhere on the chart, and that was the only ILS plate for that runway. They are not laid out very well. The Jepp charts are much more organized and cleaner presentation. But hey..it’s cheaper. The Mesa way!
