It must be significantly easier to upgrade on the same jet that try to learn a new one.

Pretty much to reiterate what people have been saying
If you're on the same jet for upgrade, life will be easier. It is the people who don't study, unprepared, expect to be spoon fed the information, these are the folks who have issues.
I'm assuming you got April for upgrade class? So you have a month use this time to knock out the GOM. That test is no joke and people get sent back. After that review the CFM, where to find information, you would be surprised how many line captains don't know what's in the CFM.
After that is done then start working on capt flows and callouts, callouts, callouts. Many people make it to sim and are sent right back to FO after 3-5 sims.
Other than that I wish you the best of luck in training
