I agree. Walking away from the table is usually done to test the other guy's eagerness for an agreement .... see if he blinks. Another purpose can be to "demonstrate toughness" just before you cut a deal, thereby pre-mollifying constituents. But what if you don't want a negotiated settlement (or have given up all hope of attaining one)? In that case, you would not walk away, but dig in your heels and stay 'til the end, so that a "bad" arbitration award can't be even partially attributed to your lack of negotiating stamina. Therefore, I think that the "walk-away" means that negotiations are very much alive.

Default A gun to my head?

As a former Western Pilot I have to chime in here.

We did great in the merger. So did Pan Am.

The message that was sent to the NWA guys was that the mediation ended at Chmn Bloch's suggestion. I took that to mean he was just recommending that they take a break until after next week's hearings. I'm sure that we'll get some more admonishment to get back to the table during next week's proceedings.

Xray, I disagree. First, a negotiated list between pilots would be more responsive to the actual needs of pilots than what the arbitrators can come up with. Second, I think given the challenges we've faced in these last few years I think our MEC has done well for the Delta pilots. Third, let's not lose sight of the fact that having pilots cashing in with equity shares and pay raises on the front end of a merger is unprecedented and a welcomed change from how things normally unfold. That wasn't done by acceident, it was negotiated.

PG
If the above scenario were true, it would mean the DAL negotiators are far more amenable than the DAL guys on this board. There hasn't been a single pilot here willing to move one inch off of ratios. I've made a recommendation that moved off of DOH completely. One based on a ratio with dynamic seniority, and many other NWA pilots here think this has some merit. But on this board, it is nothing but every DAL guy still firmly entrenched in their own end zone.

DAL at the 50 yard line eh?? Too funny.

yeah, I'll try to remember that the next time I taxi down ramp 2 looking at all the 90 seat RJs going to cities we used to fly on the mainline.

You assume that our contract wouldn't have been rejected during the 1113c and without a contract stopping them, that the company wouldn't have been free to put more than a 76 seater on ramp 2. Then what? Oh yeah, a LCC take over, perhaps not a hostile one and a creditors committee with no confidence in a stand alone BK exit. Given the playing field we were on, I think we did alright.

This is exactly why we will never negotiate a list. You come out at the far end of the spectrum with a staple and think it is middle ground. See ya in arbitration. Fortunately we cant do worse so I'm looking forward to Dec 8th.
