post merger regional mess
In my boredom at the crash pad - here is the breakdown of a/c that would be flying for DELTA/NWA if these two finally do end up merging
50 seat aircraft
Pinnacle - 124
Mesaba - 17
Comair - 86
ASA - 108
Express JET - 21
Mesa - 36
Skywest -56
Republic - 58 for delta?
I found 70 - 70 seat aircraft
At the end of 2008 there will be 133 76 seat aircraft
Add in the 13 emb120's that skywest flies and the 48 saabs mesaba flies and we have a grand total of
772 regional aircraft!
It is going to be real intersting to see how they figure this out, it is my understanding that if you have a contract with a regional, you can't just throw it away in a merger
pinnacle for example has a contract to fly 124 a/c for nwa and 16 for DCI
in the contract it says that nwa can exchange 200's for larger but it says if NWA enters into a merger they can't take a/c away since nwa is out of bancruptcy.
I dont know about any of the other regionals contracts

I suspect 50 seat RJs are on their way out to be replaced by bigger brother CRJ900s or E175s. But you are right. There are a lot of 50 seat RJs right now. Saabs will probably be kept around till they are no longer profitable to run due to maintenance. NWA has created the Mesaba Compass Holding Corporation to run Mesaba and Compass. If NWA/DAL merges, they will likely try to keep ones in their system down to fewer numbers but keep airlines like Mesaba, Compass, Pinnacle, Comair and Skywest to use them to whipsaw against the other.
As far as the contracts with regionals go, they are about as good as the paper it is wriitten on. Airlines at both are run by beancounters and lawyers so if the contract is not beneficial for their profit, they will try to find a loophole to renegotiate it or get rid of it altogether.

Yeah. This might get really ugly for some. You left out 36 CRJ900 for Mesaba and E175s for Compass. Pinnacle is also getting CRJ900s for DAL. No one knows how it will affect regionals but I do think there will be a major reconsolidation of regionals.

The count on the 76 seat aircraft includes the 36 crj 900 and 36 emb 175 for NW airlink. Plus skywest comair freedom and pinnacle for delta
