Southwest has a great mentoring program.
Go am get the hardest, busiest commuter job you can.
Work 6 to 8 very fast legs a day for about 5 years.
Get really good at being very busy and drinking from a fire hose.
Also learn how to eat while flying a approach to 200 and a half.
Learn how to push the limits of the plane and yourself .

When you have mastered all the above then go to SWA and collect the
best pay in the business. Working with the top pilots
and management in the industry. I am too old and tired to work that hard.
Give me the 15 hour, 3-2-1 Three day trip.

thanks for the answer.
I am pretty much doing what you said I should do: commuter job flying a metroliner about 100-120 a month (over the last 16 months i flew 1500 hours including 780 turbine PIC). I am still working at how to eat while flying a approach to 200 and a half, though.
I had never thought I could even think about going to southwest even though I would have certainly applied when reaching 1300 PIC.

I do have a very good internal recommendation at Spirit airlines. And I am supposed to give my friend my resume when I reach 2500 TT next month.
I am trying to understand how strong of an impact will have hte mentoring program on my application at SWA.
In other words is it worth it to give up on spirit and apply at SWA in 6 months when I have 1300 turbine PIC
thanks

I don't know about this mentoring program at SWA but if you can get in the door at SWA then by all means do it. If you don't need to be on the property at SWA then keep plugging away at flight time anywhere you can. Good luck

so in other words, you think I should keep flying my metro for 500 more hours ( until 1300 turbine pic) and say no to Spirit if/when they do call me?

Keep building the time. IF Spirit calls, go. Then keep plugging away at where you REALLY want to be.
If SWA can GUARANTEE you a JOB (not interview) because of this mentoring thing, then I would do that.
Can you fly on the side while doing this with SWA?

If you want a legacy/SWA/Big freight job then I'd recommend getting the 1300 PIC then going to Spirit, or any other national. 800 PIC turbine may be as good as 50 PIC turbine at a place like SWA, Continental or whoever else that demands you meet the mins. They'll be a a jet job waiting for you in four months time.

If all of SWA's flight attendants looked like "fly2ski"'s pic., we would all be there!!!

FMI: too true, too true

saviboy: I'm pretty new here (check my post count). If you go to Spirit, do you go to the right seat and for how long? If the answer is yes (and for awhile), then I'm thinking I would stay where you are and get that 1300 turbine PIC.

Again, I am but a simple caveman fighter pilot, so take that FWIW.
