It's neither hurting nor helping them.

Granted, there's a certain morbid curiosity about it all, but shutting it down won't accomplish anything; the cat's outta the bag...

Ok let's get the elephant up front and quit ignoring it, too many pilots push their ability to be alcohol test free on layovers. I fly all international and have personally seen more than one person have more than two drinks well within 12 hours of pickup time. I also have flown to the UK and have had a couple of people who sleep till 4 pm and really don't start their evening until 9 pm local with a 9 am pickup.

The real question is how do we handle these few regulars who put themselves, our company and passengers at risk?

These two now have spent a night in jail, have to spend some bucks on a lawyer and will probably loose a substantial amount of pay before its all over. I hope it works out well for them, but there is a lesson for us all here.

FOM 1.90.4. 8 hrs prior to "duty". What does pickup have to do with anything? I used to fly international too. Many stations have a 1 hr + van ride so they are technically legal if they have a beer 7 hrs before pickup. 12 hours was sUAL. Is it smart or prudent? Probably not, but legal? Yes if they are at 0% and 8 hrs.

And I'm going to withhold judgement until we get all the story. Getting arrested doesn't mean they were guilty. They may be, but can we cut a couple fellow UAL pilots a break until we know everything?

I flew intl, including LHR, for several years too. Have to agree about the elephant. Sorry UALIAH. The two (home base time) red eyes in a three-day euro trip are draining enough. To add drinks "7 hours before pickup" is just pressing the luck. These guys only fly 3-5 times per month; why not drink at home with friends and family. Why the culture (in a small subset of intl pilots I'd note) to go drinking late on euro trips. Not sure. Europe has zero tolerance on alchohol for driving and flying. It's a gamble and every once in a while, you lose the bet.

I completely agree with everything you said. I was just pointing out that 12 hrs to pickup ended for UAL with the merger. I even said I didn't think it was prudent, but that by our own FOM is was legal.

I think you may be misinterpreting the wording....if intent to fly is there you may be in trouble. Intent can be showing up in uniform in the lobby.

Again from our own FOM. 1.90.2. Alcohol Policy under

Intent to perform duty

Being on the airport property before a flight segment.

Not trying to be a smart ass here, but do people actually read the FOM?

Again smart to push the limits? Ofc not, but I was simply pointing out what is in our manual.

Yes, but remember what is more restrictive is controlling....the FOM may say 8 hours is the UAL rule but if FAA or local says X amount is more restrictive that is controlling...IE .02 vs .04...FOM is not controlling in this case.

Also, when it comes to this they could not care less what the FOM says
