Then again, that's been Silicon Valley's M.O. for some time: acquire innovative competitors before they reach a critical mass to actually pose a threat, then shut them down.

Usually works out fantastically well for the venture capital funds backing the startup, and few else.

Hawaiian might be wise to support B6's bid. They have a code share with B6 and might benefit from code share revenue out of SFO and LAX, whereas Alaska is a threat along the West Coast to Hawaii routes. HA is getting 16 321neo's to do battle on those Pac tracks. Don't want an AS/VX combo to change what may have been a favorable dynamic when the orders were placed. ... Although I'm not sure how they could "support" the jetBlue bid unless they chip in, and who knows what that would look like. I guess I'm talking myself into liking a B6/VX/HA merge. ...which is important because the 3 CEO's will probably be giving me a call for my input. Lol.

This should thrill the Alaska pilot group.....their company continues to pay them second-tier wages & they go out and spend $2 billion on VA?

If you're real quiet, you can juuuuuuust start to see the seniority list integration hypotheses beginning about this over on the Alaska section of APC. My guess is that in 24 hours from now there will be at least 1 person calling for a staple of VA and/or 1 person calling for DOH AFTER 2007. We'll see....

I propose we avoid this negativity from the start. There will be the usual flame-baiters, but we have a choice to keep this (SLI) discussion on a positive note should a deal happen. Alaska is my 4th airline (after other takeovers, bankruptcies, and furloughs) and even though I have started at the bottom yet again, I find it a pretty nice place to come to work. Alaska is very concerned about employee morale as it is extremely important to the culture of the airline. I would think this would extend to Virgin America should this deal ever happen. The airline simply cannot afford to have a bitter integration. Thankfully, both carriers are ALPA too. Peace, respect and prosperity to us all. Respectfully,
DB

I agree, this is way too soon for any SLI talks. Don't let some arrogant select few jetBlue pilots start a fight over AK/VX.

Seems like either way B6 wins.

If you go back over the history of VX, you'll see that Branson and the VCs have a LOT of dead money in the VX project. A sales price of $2B is probably close to breakeven for them. And that's ignoring the time value of money.

I find it interesting that they're looking at selling now, when they've finally got some positive cash flow. I'm wondering if the costs of bringing in another ten aircraft in a declining RASM environment is creating negative cash flow.
