Not to defend anything on guard that isn't appropriate, but if you have a boat and monitor 16 (USCG guard) you will hear radio abuse on a continuous basis that is beyond sad. Boater's (have a community) that is so unprofessional and unaware of what the radio is for as to make monitoring the emergency channel almost impossible on the weekends in the summer.

Not backing down, eh? You reinforce my point kid.
RhinoPherret - Too true, thanks. I also think some guys just can't help but try to get in the last word, as if that makes them right. I try not to start or get involved in spear chucking on these forums, but sometimes trouble finds me.

As have I. No more 121.5 for me - 98% of my flying is single pilot IFR in low / middle altitudes and I have to concentrate. I'd always turn it lower than the main comm but just gave up when idiotic banter keeps on drowning out center. At night or over the midwest it seems to be better and I keep it on.

First, I'm far from being a "Guard Hawk", and I've got a reasonable sense of humor (I think).....but in the last six months, I've heard more inane, immature "stuff" over guard than I have in the previous 25 years of flying to the point it's getting in the way of normal communication.
I was asked to call another a/c on guard and transmit a frequency to a crew who missed a handoff.....the whole time, we were interrupted by a guy who was obviously making fun of "Guard Nazi's", by snickering and saying "You're on Guard!....then a response "you're on Guard too!"...."no.....you're on Guard!"
I mentioned this to the pilot I was flying with in Miami two days ago, and he shook his head and said "I've heard the same"...Now we're not talking about the occasional funny caustic comment when someone makes a whole PA over Guard, or the like. Now he is all of about 35, but he said it is all the "young guys/gals" coming up who have "no sense of professionalism". He said it was rampant where he came from. (He's been flying since 15).
Not 5 minutes later, we hear "Hello"...."hello"...."hello"....."Hello"...ma ybe 10 times with a good 10 sec break between the calls....finally someone says "You're transmitting on guard"...simple, unemotional, just data transfer.....the the response comes "<snicker>...there he is...I found him...'The Guard Nazi'".
Meanwhile, folks calling for push and taxi clearance couldn't get a word in edgewise on ground it was so busy.
Later, same flight, someone pops off with "Livin the dream!" in the same voice from the youtube video. Two weeks ago, I hear "work, work, work, contract, work"...also from the video.
The only thing I can figure is that with the advent of social media, some of our "professional" brethren are treating guard as a "twitter post"....trying to be funny over guard to untold masses in an attempt to get social validation in return.
What disturbs me even more is that either they are Captains or the Captains they are flying with condone this behavior. We can make this job fun in the cockpit....but the childish behavior is going to bite us in the rear sometime.
I figure this post will nominate me for "Tool of the day"....I guess the benefit of being an old crusty guy (50) is that I really don't give a %#$#.
For the record, that essay that circulated about the guy monitoring guard with the quivering toothpick in his mouth was hilarious and I wish I had a copy.......but the baiting and nonsense has really gotten out of control lately.

I agree 100% and had the same reaction!

You guys are so entertaining! I don't need to say "Guaaarrrrdddd" anymore. I can just come on here and read about the all the hurt feelings instead.
I'm kidding of course. As much as the "Guarrdddddd" hijinks is annoying, it and the YouTube "living the dream pt2", was born from a little bit of reality:
Way before these shenanigans, the same scenario as the YouTube video occurred to me. As I broadcast on guard at ATC's request, an old crusty voice jumped on to berate me for being on guard - "this is a guard emergency frequency". All too often I have heard that. The rumor was it was old crusty Delta pilots.
Either way, this thread is a perfect example of an older generation "blaming" a younger generation. You make us all look like the jerks. Get over yourselves.
- a 63 year old pilot.

It has nothing to do with "generational blaming." It is about maturity. By definition the younger you are the more immature that you are. With larger numbers of younger Pilots getting hired we are getting more and more immature idiots that think talking on an emergency frequency is funny - it is pathetic.
This problem is only now reaching epidemic proportions and we have had guard for over 50 years - ask yourselves why?
Why do we not hear it over the oceans - not as many young Pilots flying over the ponds.
Make no mistake - I am sure that over 95% of the young Pilots are extremely professional but unfortunately a few buffoons are tarnishing the image of a lot of professional pilots.
Finally it does not matter if you are the crusty old a-hole acting as the self appointed guard police or a 23 year old punk with a stunted sense of humor - both are wrong. If you hear someone mistakenly broadcast on guard a simple "Check you frequency" works well and is about all that we should ever hear on guard other then legitimate ATC requests and emergencies.
