That's my strategy.

I never respond to the idiots. Just makes them feel empowered and important somehow.

I'm 24 and have NEVER made a dumbass comment on guard. The only people I've ever seen or heard of doing it were in their mid 30s. I told one CA to **** once.

It's gotten so commonplace up and down the east coast anymore that when I fly, neither one of us even comments. Almost like it was synchronized, we each reach down and deselect the Comm R, look at each other, roll our eyes and continue about our business.

I usually take about 5 or so minute sanity break and then start listening again.

Aside from, you know, safety and professionalism, I experienced another great reason to not gum up Guard yesterday. Some poor guy checked in with Ops on Guard, to which my CA immediately responded with a hearty "Guuuuuaaard" call. This of course prompted about 30 sec of witty banter between other aircraft, which we snickered to. Not too long after we got a frequency change, and when the CA checked in on the new freq another string of witticisms began immediately.... because he'd checked out on Guard and then checked in again on Guard. Coffee damn near came out my nose I was laughing so hard. Play with Guard and you might burn yourself!

You're part of the problem.

When you enable stupid, unprofessional behavior, you're just as idiotic as the person acting like a fool.

I can imagine you fools going back to your homes and telling your wife or friends, "OMG Today was sooo funny guise! This guy accidentally transmitted on the wrong frequency and for like, 2 minutes we all kept blocking each other and yelling the same thing over and over again and it was so funny! I had coffee and cookies coming out of my nose, I got it all over my unironed shirt!"

Um, it wasn't my idea for him or any of the others out there to chime in nor did he ask me before he did. And if you think I'm going to lecture a guy with 20 more years in the 121 business than me on proper Guard etiquette after the fact in the middle of a trip you'd be wrong. If you think he'd actually change his tune after said lecture from a punk on probation you'd also likely be wrong.

I laughed because he reaped what he'd helped sow. In USAF debrief, we called these types of errors "self-critiquing". Hopefully the embarrassment he inflicted upon himself will prevent him from repeating his mistake. I told the story here because I figure some of our readers here might think twice before joining in the Guard follies the next time around. I'd call that something other than enabling...

Who cares if he has 20 more years in the 121 business? Nobody is enticing a "lecture" but if you ignore stupid actions, and people who act like children see that their actions don't get a snicker, they stop.

Who cares if you're on probation? You think you're gonna get called into the chief pilot's office and get fired for not laughing at "GUARRRRDDDDDD" comments by captains?
