Ha lol your so right. I continuously see good guys that have been at the regionals for years and just assuming they have decent records because I know they have the time can't even get a phone call.
I'm just going out on a limb here but it can't be these two jerk offs first rhodeo.

I, for one, enjoy being "off the grid" for couple of hours commuting to and from work.
"On their phones" is sort of general. My phone has hundreds of saved articles, books, audiobooks, podcasts, textbooks for classes I'm taking, games, Duolingo, Flica, and on and on. Why don't people complain when others are constantly "on their book"? Should one sit idly instead of doing something constructive? Sure, a lot of people are probably just wasting time, but not always.

Older folks always complain about phones and headphones. A captain said something to me about my phone/headphones once (which I always take off before approaching the gate). I was listening to a Great Courses lecture - the kind of thing that saves me from the monotony of flying an airplane around while listening to sh*tty jokes about strippers and minorities all day.

I say let them keep texting or talking on their phones. Anything that diverts their attention away from playing music and farting on 121.5 is alright by me.

They were texting and e-mailing. Trust me, they were VERY important people! There was a lot of "reaching out" and "touching base" and "following up" going on.

Cringeworthy terms, but the corporate crowd uses them without a second thought. I think I'd have a hard time seeming "friendly" in emails if I were ever to quit flying.

Once you get to a major you should have enough experience in life not to do these things.

So you are taxing around listening to lectures, you must be really smart or something.

No, in the airport. Here in the regionals we don't get to hang out with all you classy mainline peeps.

When I was a flight instructor I would routinely leave my phone off all day. I might check it at lunch. Many flights with quick turns and I just really didn't have time to be on it. Of course this was before smart phones but after texting. My girlfriend would complain constantly because I didn't answer her texts in a short time.

When I flew turboprops and had a smart phone I was still pretty good about it. Many flights with quick turns and so again I wouldn't be on it much at all throughout the day. Girlfriend turned wife stopped caring about it.

On the Jet now, I try to be good. I don't have any games on it, don't check apc, and I do my best to turn it off after I check the radar and buckle up before push. And it doesn't come on until after passengers are off most of the time.

When my wife was pregnant with our second child, about 4 weeks before the due date it looked hit or miss as to whether she was going to go early. Doctors were assuring me she wouldn't, but there were other signs that made me concerned. Even though I was doing a schedule that amounted to day trips or short overnights close to home, I found myself increasingly distracted. I was checking the phone all the time, fretting after takeoff that she wouldn't be able to get me for an hour or two and then it could take me many more hours to get home once we landed. I finally made the decision to call my chief pilot and dropped the rest of my trips for the last two weeks before the due date. She went late too. Yeah I burned a lot of time off and got less off after the delivery, but I could tell I was getting unsafe. For most pilots I think it's like any bad cockpit habit that we occasionally fall into. If we self examine, and work hard we can remove some of those distractions or procedural drift issues.

But yeah I think I'd fire someone who used there phone on a checkride too. Just like 10 or 15 years ago if I were on a date and they talked on their phone to someone else I would have left then and there. Assuming no one was dying or giving birth. I think if you did that now on a date, she'd tweet about it while you were still walking away.
