Family With Troublesome Child Thrown Off AirTran Flight

Thanks for the kudos koz, but I must say that it wasn't so much a healthy "fear" that I taught them, it was more a respect issue that I tried to instill in them. I taught them that if they didn't respect others (diners and passengers, etc.) then those people would not look at them with respect. It kind of ties into the age old adage "treat others as you would want to be treated". I think that I've raised considerate, respectful, bright young men, but it certainly hasn't always been easy! I'm proud of them, and of course I adore both of them!
If you beat a puppy you end up with a dog who is fearfull and is more prone to violence / acting out / misbehaving. I would never BEAT a dog or a child. Anyone who thinks about raising a hand on a child in a public place should be very very carefull.. this can lead to serious legal problems. There are smarter ways to discipline. just my opinon.

Very true. I have no kids yet and don't really plan to have any anytime soon ,but i like your approach.

While my children got spanked, they were never ever beaten (tempted, though!). But they didn't get spanked in public, either.

Instead of putting the onus on the airlines, simply make a rule that lap children are not allowed on board. Bring your carseat or stay home. There are laws that require children to be restrained in a carseat in an automobile.
Why are airplanes (or school busses for that matter!) exempt? Impact can kill a child, whether its from a car accident or unreported turbulence.

I'm glad the FAA made a sensible decision.
When I retired 6 years ago, the idea to let you tuck the little buddy into a car seat was not approved, and disallowed. The FAA obviously felt they knew better and decided you were better off holding the buddy in your lap! This was nearly a standing joke at recurrent training. ... But rules were rules.
I hope they have extended it to any car seat, as any car seat is better than holding the kid in your lap!
I also think the crew made the right decision on this trip. There is not much more annoying than a fussy child on a flight.
