When I got hired at EAL, it was bigger than DL, more O&D traffic in ATL than DL, the "Wings of Man". Disappeared 5 years later, as did many other notable companies. Don't assume anything.
Yes, few stay at one corporate for a career, though I've met many that have and they retired very comfortably, BUT no seniority when the job ends. Walk out the door and you don't have to start at the bottom.
All that said, right now, with these conditions, getting hired at a legacy is, without a doubt, is the deal, IF you get hired. LCCs, I skeptical of, some will disappear, bet on it. VA hasn't shown a profit yet, that which cannot continue, stops.

The reason for skepticism for LCCs is the seniority issue. If they do fold in the next downturn, you're sunk--bottom of a list, if you can get hired at all. The system is very poor at resilience--handling failure of your career. I did 17 years as a military technician, at 52, I took a deferred retirement and jumped at the position I have now. It was a gutsy move, but was the best one I ever did. I have another pension, doubled my retirement savings, did loads of great experiences. It is not possible to make those kinds of "survivor" moves in the airlines, but those moves can be essential in today's economy. I've had numerous offers to move, just didn't feel like it.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, a lot of great information, insight, and wisdom lurks here. You are right I have to wait for a call first. I also totally understand that a call may never ever come either. It seems like a tough code to crack, but if it takes a few years for it to happen theres worse places to sit and wait.

Mayday for Career Advice
Hi All,
Need all the advice I can get for applying to the Major .
I'm an American citizen with FAA CPL Instrum Multi + citation rating. But, I have a foreign ATPL with foreign 121 air carrier narrow & wide body mostly SIC 4000+ jet hrs. My last flight was in 2007 when I got qualified for foreign 121 B737 PIC in Sim & A/C checkride, but the airline went bankrupt so then I came back home to the US, but no luck with the flying job since it is extremely competitive here and I don't have FAA ATP nor written.
After suffering 7 years of flying itch, due to non-flying job, I've had it!
I must go back to flying again, because it is in my blood.
I need real advices on the following:
Q. Should I
a. just get an ATP written? (with CTP ATP . I missed the Aug 1st ATP written deadline)
b. get an FAA ATP with either B737 or A320 type rating?
c. get hired at regional and let them provide ATP + type rating?

It's a good thing that Delta is so big. I hope they hire everyone who wants to work there. Is it true that they've always been the best and will continue to be? I guess I'm not sure what I'm going to do if they don't hire me and I end up at my safety, Hawaiian Airlines (someday, if I'm lucky). Peace

I will go out on a limb and suggest that you will not "end up" at HAL if you approach them with that kind of attitude. Is flying a route like HNL-SYD really something you would relegate to a "safety"? Public disrespect is a bad way to get hired somewhere. Just saying. Have you interviewed there?

I do the think anyairline that has survived this past decade has proven they have the ability to weather a downturn, especially a LCC that has less exposure to intl' turmoil etc.
Amazing how I used to not give a crap what happened to my career until I had a kid, lol
On a side note. Here is a lovely post from the klsytakesit
give it a rest copilot....if delta wants to hire a damn fine pilot....it is their choice..they own the place....i am a capt at alaska and dont even have ged.....the worst pilots I have flown with are the und wannabees....the best are just pilots....give it a rest punk.....

This is my only concern with Spirit. I love working here and am 6 months away from being 55-60%. I will literally be half way up the list with much more growth to come this decade. The problem is Im 34 And if this place SH-Ts the bed in 10 years, I'll be in kind of horrible spot, lol.

I wouldn't take his posts very seriously, lol. He's an "Alaska" CA apparently, lol
