If you are even remotely thinking about making a change start the application process and see where it leads you. There are a ton of regional and military guys who are focused on the big three. For the near term the competition is brutal with a whole lot more trying to crack the code than getting through. I think you've got the cart before the horse and should be worrying about what to do once you get and invite to an interview or a job offer.

This is actually very sound advice.

Friends of mine are asking me "why haven't I heard anything back from Spirit, it's been two weeks since I went to the job fair!"

The reason is that they have some 7000+ applications for 250 positions...

And that's just for Spirit. DAL, UAL, AA, WN, F9, VA... Lots of competition out there.

Get the interview first then worry about the details.

But either way, come on over. The 121 pool is niiiiice...

I highly, highly recommend you have a look at this "article" about career advice from Reid Hoffman, the founder of linked in. It may help with your decision. Specifically the section where he talks about "risk".

It is written for college graduates, but it translates well to anybody considering a change.

First you need to have a job offer. Then you can consider what will be your best move.
Sounds like a very nice corporate gig, little weak on the retirement side, but with that much time off maybe you could pick up some contract gigs to put into a Roth retirement account?
Probably over 90% of Corporate doesn't last forever, even with the best of companies/families because the leadership/family never stays the same.

It sounds like a great job, but at your age, if you were lucky enough to get on with one of the big 3, you could* have a great career. Remember that even 121 airlines are subject to economy/terrorists etc and furloughs happen that have left guys on the street for 10+ years.

If only we saw some of that come profit sharing time, lol.
(I will say, 85k this year (2nd year F/O) and easily 100k next year with most weekends and all holidays off is pretty awesome )

I hear what Galaxy is saying but I'm not too worried about Spirit running into a big bad Legacy. We made money when everyone else went bankrupt (except SWA), but I think at this point Spirit is still a better choice than SWA. (For today anyway). Our business model works and though DAL, AA & UAL can not match our costs and ticket prices, they will certainly have enough money in the bank to match our prices and that could get interesting........(though I think they have bigger issues than our 1% market share)

Anyway, the answer is and will always be DELTA.

Great thread! I'm in a similar boat too. A short time at a regional until I was furloughed, then found good work in 91 corporate. Hell, I'm even 30 years old too. My 91 job is great and there are people out there who would slap me for wanting to leave it. My applications have been in for over a year now and I'm looking forward to the day I get called for my turn to interview. Its reassuring to hear that other people are trying to do the same thing, and that some like Kansas have made the transition and are happy they did. Good luck!

Sounds like you're in a great position to be "stuck" in!

When I got hired at EAL, it was bigger than DL, more O&D traffic in ATL than DL, the "Wings of Man". Disappeared 5 years later, as did many other notable companies. Don't assume anything.

Yes, few stay at one corporate for a career, though I've met many that have and they retired very comfortably, BUT no seniority when the job ends. Walk out the door and you don't have to start at the bottom.

All that said, right now, with these conditions, getting hired at a legacy is, without a doubt, is the deal, IF you get hired. LCCs, I skeptical of, some will disappear, bet on it. VA hasn't shown a profit yet, that which cannot continue, stops.

It's a good thing that Delta is so big. I hope they hire everyone who wants to work there. Is it true that they've always been the best and will continue to be? I guess I'm not sure what I'm going to do if they don't hire me and I end up at my safety, Hawaiian Airlines (someday, if I'm lucky). Peace
