I don't see any event on the horizon that would have anywhere near the results of the last decade of destruction on the piloting profession. Neither another recession, or even a 9/11 would have a significant negative impact on your career. The bad things happened over the last decade plus, because of scope relief, the raise of the retirement age, and the legacies shedding the pension plans.
Single pilot airliners are the next big threat, who knows when those things will be online. There needs to be an all new ATC system first, and you know how fast .gov operates....so you are pretty safe.
