Just hit 75% in category. Should be better than 50% by my 1yr anniversary. Hopefully never have to sit reserve again unless I really want to. These are crazy times, and I like them.

You'll make the mistake of changing categories to fly bigger, or upgrade. We all do!

Does anyone know the current count of regional pilots and the average ratios of military to civilian pilot breakdown in new hire classes?

It won't be more than a few years before the demand for pilots at career airlines will drain the supply of regional and military pilots.

At Delta, according to the last few pages of the whos been hired thread, it seems 7-8 military for every 2-3 civilian.

Let's hope ALPA doesn't screw us again on raising the age and lowering the 1500 hour rule.[/QUOTE]

Do you really think ALPA decides such issues?

They clearly contribute to the decisions. Remember Prater and age 65? Completely went against the wishes of the majority of ALPA members. If you are going to compliment ALPA for the good things they do, please criticize them for their failings. The age 65 rule, along with scope issues, caving on the gutting of pensions, etc. are among those failings.

That said...

Numbers don't lie, past performance is not indicative of future results, and the only way to avoid unmet expectations in this business is to have no expectations at all.

As a younger guy that started my first flying job under a year ago, these retirement numbers make me cautiously very optimistic. I set my goal to be in the ball park of competitive hiring mins for the majors within 5 years of starting said first flying job.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the next 9/11 or other economic disaster doesn't cripple the airline industry again.

I don't see any event on the horizon that would have anywhere near the results of the last decade of destruction on the piloting profession. Neither another recession, or even a 9/11 would have a significant negative impact on your career. The bad things happened over the last decade plus, because of scope relief, the raise of the retirement age, and the legacies shedding the pension plans.

Single pilot airliners are the next big threat, who knows when those things will be online. There needs to be an all new ATC system first, and you know how fast .gov operates....so you are pretty safe.
