Because there are plenty of dark nooks and crannies to look in when conducting a preflight. It also helps direct your eyes so as not to miss important things. Competent pilots know this.

I understand Buzz. You've reached that point in your career where you know it all. It's all right. I get it. But you see there are plenty of dark places to look at, like the wheel well and the engine.....oh never mind. I'm sure you don't really need to worry about that stuff.
