I think RA has decided that SEA will be our West Coast gateway to Asia -- at all costs. SFO is UAL's. LAX is UAL's (and too crowded.) NRT is proving too remote and obsolete. So SEA it is. It's inevitable. The stakes are way too high. There might be high costs involved, but it's a fait accompli.

Actually, SEA makes the most sense as a gateway to Asia of any West Coast city. Whether that will impact AS's loyal West Coast passenger base is arguable. The biggest impact I see is AS's transcon traffic. They just don't have the critical mass to compete in those markets with Mother Delta.

1) The real objectives and true scope of these moves,
2) Response from Alaska,
3) Public reaction, and
4) The role of other airlines.
I also think we should tone done the RA cult just a little. He's effective. He's a very good CEO, and he seems to be a dedicated airline CEO. This is good. It doesn't make us bullet-proof.
On the other hand, the things Pelican and others are throwing at us (wolverines, WeknowJuno, and 4AM flights) are pretty weird. I don't think I've ever seen a town that doesn't like having multiple airlines trying to be the hometown airline. If a ticket is $10 cheaper elsewhere, the crowds are instantly smitten.
I remember PSA well. Smiles on the planes. Really cool airline. Nobody on the West Coast cried when it was gobbled up by UsAir.Only
