Scoping 50 then 70 then 90 seat jets to mainline seemingly wasn't worth the negotiating capital it would have cost.

Scope for those jets to be flown at mainline was basically sold...sold for pensions, for higher payrates, for better workrules, and for other reasons that in hindsight sometimes make little or no sense.
