ALPA outsources lobbying communications
Check this out and see if you guys get the same results.
In a recent Call to Action campaign asking ALPA membership to oppose the NAI application, I was sent an email with a link to contact my reps in DC. Today I got a 'thank you' for participating from the createsend4.com domain.
Being a skeptic, I wanted to know who createsend4.com is and if was registered to ALPA. With a quick whois search, I found is registered to a company in Australia. Great. ALPA is outsourcing their communications offshore.
I have two concerns:
First, ALPA doesn't seem to have a problem providing outsourced contractors the membership list (capwiz, change.org, createsend) without informing it's membership. In the era of a malware infected Olymipics, Target store database breaches, NSA metascans I wish our union could produce a privacy policy and let us know how our membership information is used and by whom.
Second, why the hell does ALPA have in IT department? Looking at the quality of the product they provide to membership, it's clear that the organization could save money and get a much better product if they outsourced, but they don't (Congratulations ALPA Unit 1).
[JetBlue pilots take note, here's the resource that ALPA national provides to the largest airlines in the association: UAL Pilots > UAL MEC Public Page or how about Delta Pilots > Public That's 15 year old freeware called Dot Net Nuke my friends, and that's what you'll get.]
ALPA IT staff is very well compensated but is stuck with 1999 technology, why? As ALPA technology demands grow, I believe we'll see more outsourcing which should make everyone question how and why our dues are being spent on in-house IT.
Before the accusations fly about me trying to smear ALPA, know that I've been a member for over 20 years and have held a volunteer position for nearly all of my time in ALPA. My aim is to raise awareness, and if other members feel that we should get more IT for our dues, then lets demand change. IT problems at National go beyond a single council or airline, it's going to take all airlines to demand better.
Going offshore is a new low, even for ALPA. I'm disgusted.

What it comes down to is that they don't care. They're not a union, they're a business. Their goal is to maximize income and minimize costs in order to provide benefits to their senior leadership and stakeholders.
They don't care at all about your career and know some outdated or outsourced communications thing isn't going to affect you voting them off the property. So, go with whats cheapest. Check off the box and nothing more. Anything beyond that is an added cost for no benefit.

Probably because so many of ALPA's own dues paying members feel their own interests aren't being given the same support as NAI or the customs facility at AUH.
