Hang in there, Trent, you will with those quals. The cork has just popped on hiring. I'd be surprised if you weren't called in the near future. Good luck!

What has been the average time from application submission to a call or a fix-it email? Do you all think the times are getting shorter or longer? I've heard anywhere from 3 weeks to a few years.

Thanks. I've had an app in for a few years now. Hopefully it will pay off at some point.

Default Would I have a chance?

Hello
I've been flying 135 for 10 years. Most of my career the major airlines have not been hiring. That has changed, finally, and I'm thinking about my chances in the 121 world. Since I've been flying 135 for a while I make ok money, wife, kid, etc. So regional job/pay is not something I'd like to do unless I have to. My question is do I have a chance of getting hired with a major airline in the next 2-3 years with no 121 time?
My qualifications:
7000 TT
3500 Turbine PIC
1100 Jet PIC
4000 multiengine
Currently flying a CE560 for a charter company as captain and have been captain for 7 years.
I will finish my BS in aviation this time next year.

Yes, you do. Finishing the degree as soon as possible is huge, as is networking. If you have friends who will write letters of recommendation, that will move your resume into a smaller pile. AS long as there aren't any unforeseen problems (oil, Middle East, Ukraine, etc.), the majors will be hiring for quite some time due to retirements. Good luck!

Thanks Spudhauler. Has anyone seen a pilot get hired with American/USair, United or Delta with only 135 time yet? I'm thinking about applying to Spirit in order to get 121 time but only if that helps my chances significantly. I'd take a 60% pay cut if it would help me get hired at a Legacy a couple years earlier.
Thoughts?

If you do a little searching, you'll find a huge number of threads and posts debating the merit of a degree. As far as being hired without one, it is possible but at least for now you're competing with 1 arm tied behind your back. Who can know what will happen in a year. Maybe all the guys with degrees who are competitive flying-wise will be gone and it won't matter, or maybe 10 more airliners will get shot down and we'll go into another post-911 world flying recession again. I don't think either of my examples are likely, but you can see the futility of trying to predict the future of this profession.

I believe there is merit in having the degree. I decided that some time ago and went back to school. Now I have 90 credits towards my 120 needed for my BS. I'll have it this time next year. I wouldn't expect that anyone could forecast what the industry will do. However, I figure you guys probably have your ear to rail better than I do. I've been stuck in my 135 whole for a while. So, the degree is in the bag. Now I'm wondering if I should leave my rather secure, decent paying 135 job and go fly for someone like Spirit to build 121 time? Or just stay here and wait for the majors to reach way down to the 135 guys?

That's a tough one. Do you feel you could stay at your current gig til retirement? Or would you be happier at a Spirit/etc airline? Assuming the legacies never called. They probably will, and may anyway, but you first have to ask yourself if you could be happy if you somehow got stuck at the stepping stone. If not, maybe waiting it out is the better choice. If so, it might be worth considering making the jump.
